Suspended postie gets backing from MP

The Leader of the House of Commons has vowed to intervene in the case of a South Staffordshire postwoman suspended by Royal Mail after a thief tried to steal her van.

Julie Roberts clung to the bonnet of her work van for nearly a mile as it was driven off by an opportunist thief in Trysull, only to be suspended for leaving her keys in the ignition.

Sir George Young has now promised to contact Royal Mail after being made aware of her plight by South Staffordshire MP Gavin Williamson in Parliament yesterday.

During the session, Sir George said: “Julie sounds like a courageous lady who was doing her best to defend Royal Mail property, and I will certainly draw my honourable friend’s remarks to the attention of the Royal Mail chairman, and make sure this lady is recognised, if appropriate, rather than penalised.”

On April 10, a thief tried to steal her van. After dropping off a package, Julie, aged 51, says she got out of the vehicle when she realised she had dropped her pen just a few yards away.

When she turned around after collecting the pen, she saw a man in the driving seat and sprung into action. Staffordshire Police have arrested and bailed a 30-year-old man from Dudley on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking and theft.

Julie, of Bull Lane, Wombourne, has received more than 100 letters from residents who have been campaigning to have her reinstated. She has worked in the Trysull and Seisdon areas for 10 years.

Common sense should prevail here but Royal Mail and their old fashioned rules are way off the mark, the manager conducting this case must be on an ego trip.

Only one problem here though mate and by your same criteria, common sense should have told the female postie in question to have removed her ignition keys from her van and to lock her van door securely whilst she went to retreive her dropped pen even for so small a distance.

That's not what he meant, everyone should be aware by now that you DON'T leave the keys in the ignition (and you most certainly don;t jump on the bonnet to try to stop a theft), yes she made a mistake, yes she should be punished, no she shouldn't lose her job but all the rest of those who this has happened to have lost theirs so RM will be just follow though and sack her.

Thank you brother DGP1 quite correct, and if walkthewalk would care to view my postings in this thread i make clear that non of us in the CWU would wish to see her loosing her job.

Look, let's face facts here: Yes, she made a stupid mistake, by forgetting to remove her keys. But who amongst us, has never made a stupid mistake? :hmmmm
It's not like she'd left the keys in, while she made a delivery. She noticed she'd dropped her pen outside, and jumped out to collect it. A moments lapse, not an act of negligence. :hmmmm Obviously, she should face a disciplinary. But the sack? :evil/mad :no no
Maybe the fact that she's got at least 10 years in (10 years in that area mentioned in the article) has something to do with it. :no no :hmmmm :arrrghhh

We are very much 'The converted' on here,we know more than the average postie, more clued up and seem to have a bit more common sense.
Round my way the drivers are still leaving the engine on while delivering packets,i have told them about the news stories on here but it falls on deaf ears.

Rule number one for RM drivers, whether they be RMC'ers or not is to lock the van when you are away from it,regardless of how long.

A screw would only have to ask in a conduct meeting whether you would leave your car engine running while you popped into a shop, and the answer would be?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

if managers were suspended or sacked for basic mistakes how many would still be in the job ? not one of them but its a different set of rules for them thats why the company is in the mess its in

10 Years Service , I wonder how many years she has been leaving the keys in the ignition ? Reps and Managers tell us all the time about this. I am sure she must have signed Security Rules for Drives

The article below a new one says...
Eventually, the thief halted the vehicle and ran off with only a handful of letters.

Not 100% if it's true but if it was, there was also mail in the front, unless he had time to nip round the back...

She looks older than 51 but that's what 21 years working for Royal Mail does for you.
And no surprise that the Daily Mail has it's usual attention to detail - "Unmarried Miss Roberts has no children"  No scandal there then.

I suppose a half mile white knuckle ride on the bonnet of a van clinging on desperately to the windscreen wipers would age anyone! I bet she can laugh about it now but at the time.........

Good luck to her anyway, even if she has lied about her age!
