Antique dealer claims Royal Mail posted valuable goods to wrong countries

AN antique dealer based near Bridgwater has criticised the Royal Mail after he claims thousands of pounds worth of items were sent to the wrong countries.

Steve Salter, of Timeless Tat, in Stogursey, said three parcels he had sent to customers across the globe, with contents valued over £4,000, had been lost in transit.

Mr Salter, who said he had been unable to insure the items with the Royal Mail, said he had been offered £108 compensation - £36 for each parcel.

The Royal Mail confirmed there were restrictions on insuring antiques or collectible goods. It said it was trying to resolve the situation.

Mr Salter said one parcel, containing a £3,500 Ming bronze vase intended for China, was now in Australia; a Chinese bronze figure posted to Thailand two months ago, was currently in Tunisia; and a £500 black bearskin rug had not even reached the Bridgwater sorting office, nine miles away.

Mr Salter said he had paid for a tracking service so he could monitor where all the items he sent were.

He said: “The latest loss is probably going to break me financially. To be told I can put in a claim for £36 for each item in 15 days is a bit of a kick in the teeth.

“I have told Royal Mail quite bluntly what I think of their service.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We are concerned to hear of the difficulties Mr Salter has experienced with these items of mail.

“Our customer services team is trying to resolve the situation and is keeping Mr Salter updated with the progress of our enquiries.”

if the customer knows which country they are in then surely a bit of digging will find whereabouts they are , if he has a senders address on the items they should in theory get back to him .If he has a tracking number then he should be able to know where they are at each point in the pipe line.

It seems very unlikely for 4 packages to simultaneously go to the wrong destinations.
I think he has messed the labels up or stuck them on the wrong parcels.

He should have been aware of the insurance before he sent them so it was his risk.
