Quarter of postal jobs could go, union warns

MULTI-MILLION pound losses at Royal Mail could mean one in four postal jobs cut in Oxfordshire, union officials claim.

The organisation announced on Tuesday it had faced a £120m loss in its letters and parcels business.

The number of letters being sent every day has fallen by 20 per cent, from 80 million five years ago to 62 million last year.

Paul Garraway, area delivery representative for the Communication Workers’ Union in Oxfordshire, said: “Of course we are worried. They are talking about one in four job losses, which will have an impact on the service in Oxfordshire.

“Who will deliver the mail?”

Nationally, 12 mail centres have closed and a further 16 are set to shut in the coming months. That includes Carterton Delivery Office, in Wycombe Way. Its 35 staff members will move to the office in Witney.

And in June 2009, the Oxford Mail Centre in Cowley closed as operations moved to Swindon. A series of ensuing strikes caused massive disruption to postal services.

The Postal Service Bill, to privatise the company, has been passed, but privatisation is not expected before next year.

Royal Mail chief executive Moya Greene said: “With the decline in volumes, we are going to be a smaller company in the future.”

The organisation would not comment on job losses.

Actually what you should have said is 'If I fail to complete my delivery then I wouldn't get a bonus for not completing' :nervous

Someone explain to me how the same amount of work can be done without a quarter of staff? Fact is they've cut and burned their way through a load of staff already, and the revisions have proved to be completely unworkable. Getting through x amount of packets and y amount of letters takes a certain amount of time, and so far RM seem to have grossly under-estimated how much so few can achieve. RM may need to cut another load of staff to survive, but if it cannot achieve the workload then there's not really much point, is there? Reality - RM is already at breaking point manned at the level that it is. This has probably been the worst year in terms of fulfilling the USO that RM has ever experienced. It can talk about more and more cuts but the reality is stark - we are now 25% under-staffed and 40% over-worked.

Remember the name of this Garraway chap if you ever get a chance to vote for him.........

"in June 2009, the Oxford Mail Centre in Cowley closed as operations moved to Swindon. A series of ensuing strikes caused massive disruption to postal services." :hmmmm

It beggars belief this reporter doesnt even know the difference between a delivery office and a Mail centre.
Nationally, 12 mail centres have closed and a further 16 are set to shut in the coming months. That includes Carterton Delivery Office, in Wycombe Way. Its 35 staff members will move to the office in Witney.

- and it's David Cameron's constituency, but there's quite a few things he can't distinguish between too.

Swindon went on strike not long after the Oxford lot got there I think (although this is obviously not what the article was referring to).
