Seven years in jail for a Southport postman who attempted to smuggle cocaine into Jersey

A SOUTHPORT postman who helped smuggle high strength cocaine into Jersey with his father is behind bars.

Mark McKenzie, 40, was part of a drugs ring that attempted to flood the island with a quarter of a kilo of the class A drug.

The father-of-two, who had an address in Scarisbrick, was jailed for seven years at Jersey’s Royal Court.

Described as an amiable postman by residents on his patch around Wyke Cop and Southport Road, McKenzie was jailed with three others after a sharp-eyed priest exposed the crimes.

The police were alerted after a package of the drug, said to have a value of £20,000, was sent to St Brelade’s Church.

Analysts said the haul of cocaine has a purity of 76%. Street cocaine is usually between 5% and 30% pure, mixed with adulterants such as benzocaine.

McKenzie, who was understood to have worked in Southport from 2007, is originally from Jersey.

Father, Donald, 60, was also handed a seven-year jail term.

One postman said workers were stunned when they learned why McKenzie “suddenly vanished”.

He was arrested by police at his home on Kew House Drive under warrant.

A Royal Mail colleague said: “It was a real shock to everyone when we learned what had happened.

“Until it all came out in the wash, everyone thought it was to do with marital trouble.

“He really is a nice fella – very funny, very articulate. I liked him, he was a big Manchester United fan. It’s shocking what he’s done.”

Last night, McKenzie’s former partner said she had split with him six months prior to his arrests. She said she had “no knowledge” at the time of his actions.

He is allowed contact to his children through a weekly phone call from prison.

Also jailed were Jersey Post delivery man Robin William Hart and Craig Alan Lester, both 40. All admitted conspiring to import 241 grams of the class A drug between 25 March and 13 July, 2010.

Lester was sentenced to six years and Hart was given four and a half years following Operation Mallet, and Detective Inspector Mark Hafey of the Crime Support Team said: “We will continue to target people we believe are intent on supplying harmful and illegal drugs to others in the island.”

:hmmmm 250g doesn't seem an awful lot to flood an entire area, maybe I'm wrong and that is a massive amount but it just doesn't seem a lot.

It depends how pure it is DGP.
250g of pure cocaine can be cut 20 times...then you have 5 kilos to sell.
