Royal Mail changes provoke late delivery complaints

CHANGES to Skem’s postal service caused a backlash of complaints about late deliveries.

One English GCSE exam marker thought this summer’s papers were lost when they did not show up for two weeks.

And a Royal Mail source described postal workers as “furious” with the changes.

Mail has been delivered later across the town after workers’ shifts changed.

There have not been any job losses, but new routes are being brought in which appear to have caused confusion and disorganisation at the sorting office on Glebe Road.

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said they were undergoing a “period of adjustment”.

Families complained about late deliveries and claimed on some days no mail was appearing at all.

The regular time for deliveries in Elmers Green is now 3pm – back from 10am.

Pensioner Roger Bell, 72, said: “It is all over the place. We are not getting our mail regularly. Our friends in other parts of Skelmersdale say the same.”

And Rob Lewis who also lives on Elmers Green said the service lost a package of sample English GCSE exam papers, sent from Yorkshire, which he was supposed to mark.

He stressed that the postmen and women had always provided a good service, but he believed they were victims of a system which did not listen to their concerns.

“We get very late deliveries and it is disorganised,” he said.

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said there had been a dramatic change in the way people communicated and fewer letters were being posted.

As a result post workers’ delivery rounds had changed.

Some rounds are being made longer and others shorter to give postal workers similar sized rounds, according to the spokeswoman.

Post workers are also being given trollies to deal with an increase in larger packages.

“All mail is being delivered every day,” said the spokeswoman. “But there is no set time where we have to guarantee delivery. These changes are introduced on a phased basis across the country. They have been introduced in Skelmersdale over the last few weeks and it has meant a period of adjustment for staff.

“However, we are doing everything possible to maintain a high level of service.”
