Pensioner Dorothy Alderson doesn’t usually celebrate Christmas in June, but this week she put up her first card.
Her niece Sheila Shaw posted a parcel containing a Christmas card and a present in Walton-le-Dale in mid-December last year, in what she thought was good time for the festive season.
When the package, containing jewellery, never arrived, the pair presumed it had gone for good.
However, a few days ago, Mrs Alderson opened her front door to find a postman with a parcel containing her much-delayed gift – almost six months after it was sent.
The 75-year-old, who lives 170 miles away in Skegness, Lincolnshire, said: “I couldn’t believe it.
“I saw my niece’s address on the back of the parcel and wondered what it was.
“Then I opened it and there was a Christmas card on top of little presents.
“I’ve put the card up now anyway.
“It was out of the blue, but nice to get it after six months.”
Mrs Alderson said she had received a Royal Mail card in December, saying she had missed a parcel delivery and to collect it from her local depot the next day.
But when she went to pick it up, the package was nowhere to be found.
Mrs Alderson said: “I went three times there and they hunted around for it but they hadn’t got it.
“It was a surprise for it to turn up months after.”
Mrs Shaw, 59, of Oakland Glen, Walton-le-Dale, said she had sent the package first class to make sure it arrived on time.
She said: “We thought it was gone for good when she went so many times to the depot and they couldn’t find it.
“Then the postman just came to the door with it in his hand.
“She was excited anyway to get it.”
Royal Mail issued an apology in December last year for delays to mail because of severe wintry weather.
Those delays saw customers receiving Christmas cards well into the new year.
A spokesman for Royal Mail said: “Royal Mail’s average daily postbag contains 68 million letters, packets and parcels, the overwhelming majority of which arrive safely and quickly at the correct address.
It is difficult to speculate as to how or why this item of mail was delayed as it was not sent via a a trackable service.
We can only apologise for the inconvenience caused to the customer.”

I would imagine that they have invented a new post for a colleague of some managing director whose function it is to advise the company media men on how they can put across to the public how delays are absolutely no fault of the business, but have come about by some extaordinary outside force or by a bunch of overpaid workers who will not get their asses into gear and get out on the streets and deliver the mail on time.

funny how they try to explain these types of mistakes by emphasising how much mail we recieve on a daily basis then tell the world how much mail we are losing to explain the job cuts and the long slide into privatisation.

We once found a three year old packet in our office. It had fallen off the top of the frame and got wedged between that frame and the frame that backed onto it in the next aisle. The person it was addressed to didn't even live there anymore.
