I started the reps job hating the managers and dom, but i have daily relations with them and you cant help but get their perspective of things over a period of time. And yes sometimes i even have a good laugh with them.

But, i am very careful to keep my feet on the ground, you cant let yourself be flattered by their attentions. I think thats the secret. I let them know on a regular basis that i am ultimately on a different side from them, and i believe they respect that.

Of course maybe your rep is actually more clever than he appears, sometimes you can get a lot more movement from those in charge if you appear or even are their friend, or appear to be "in the same boat as they are".

Diferent managers, different doms, take different strategies.

In what way?

How do you define branch?
The geographic area that my office is in. It is a poor branch, IMO, simply because unlike other branches, they simply go along with everything HQ say. They don't think for themselves. Pretty much the same as the majority of the membership :d'oh!

Luckily, our rep is experienced enough to deal with most local issues.

The bottom line is that most decent reps (from what I can gather) are being hung out to dry through lack of support at branch level and above.

In my opinion it isn't a good idea to have both the rep and the dep rep working the same shift pattern especially part-time.
You could always discuss it with them...it may be time for a change or at least try to find some alternative "spokesperson" who knows their way around the various procedures.

thanks mate. the rep and deputy arent long appointed and most people would like to at least give them a chance. just seems managment back off when you say "il just nip off and speak to my rep" but when theres no-one there you cant really say that so managers will try to influence you more. i just feel we should get the same service from our union for the first 3 days as the last

Ive known good one's and bad one's

If anyone thinks they can do any better than there current rep, stop moaning about it and put your name forward in the next election, or put up and shut up like the majority do.
