POSTIES on their bikes could become a thing of the past in Salisbury.

Post is getting heavier and health and safety rules mean Royal Mail staff now have to deliver their mail using trolleys, which they push on foot, rather than getting on their bikes.

A spokesman said: “We are looking at the efficiency of deliveries and we get more larger, blockier items now. Cycles are not the most efficient way of transporting those around. This takes the weight of the postmen and women’s shoulders because they do get a lot of muscular injuries.”

He said bikes will not be completely phased out as trolleys are not suitable in rural areas, but the new system will be a more efficient way of delivering mail.

But for one local businessman the change has proved to be a headache.

Paul Riley, who runs nursing agency Prime Care Agency in Durrington, says since last Monday postmen and women have been about five hours later than usual with deliveries.

For his business, this means that cheques are not being delivered in time for him to get them paid in the bank before 3.30pm and he is now going to the sorting office at Bulford Camp to pick up the mail rather than have delays in cheques being cleared when mail arrives at 4pm.

He said: “The cost has gone up recently and now I have to go out of way to collect my mail from the sorting office because I can’t wait for the delivery. It’s ludicrous that after 100 years of delivering mail they suddenly decide push bikes aren’t safe and we have all got to suffer.”

Royal Mail’s spokesman said: “When you bring in new ways of working, staff need time to settle in. Delivery times will hopefully improve soon but if people have concerns about any aspect of the system I would urge them to contact customer services.”

Royal Mail arnt concerned about health and safety. They will now make the postman cover bigger areas and walk longer on delivery.They will have more wear and tear on the hip, knee and ankle joints and feet.In years to come they must remember who is responsible for the arthritis they have and take good legal advice.
