'Don't touch our work' say London postal workers

Postal workers in London were waiting to find out when they will strike against job losses as Socialist Worker went to press.
Royal Mail bosses want to close the Nine Elms, Bow Locks and Rathbone Place offices with the loss of thousands of jobs.
Members of the CWU union at the two mail centres and the central London delivery office have voted
overwhelmingly for action.
But, say union activists, Royal Mail plans to move work out of the capital as early as next week could trigger action—even before an official strike begins.
“Our national conference voted unanimously to back the fight in London, and that means that no other office should touch work moved out of our offices,” said Paul Cox, a senior union rep at the giant Nine Elms mail centre.
Bosses’ attempts to move mail from striking offices have been the trigger for waves of unofficial action in the past.
Now, plans to redirect work from offices earmarked for
closure could spark action.
“That’s always been the tradition in our union—and any attempt to transfer our mail should be met by a strong response,” Paul added.
Merlin Reader, a union rep at Mount Pleasant, agrees. “Many postal workers in threatened offices are seeing this as a fight for the union—especially after management imposed new shift patterns last week,” he told Socialist Worker.
“But this is an attack on the union everywhere, not just in London. This fight needs to go national. We should be preparing for a national strike to defend every job.”
