Campaigners pressing for a Post Bank to be established have accused the Government of “another missed opportunity” by failing to include the idea in its plans for a Green Investment Bank.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said the institution would be the world’s first public bank dedicated to the green economy, with investments starting from April 2012. Early priorities will potentially include offshore wind, waste and non-domestic energy efficiency.
The Communication Workers Union, which is part of a coalition of business, union and other groups calling for a Post Bank, said the Government had “wasted” another chance to bolster the Post Office.
General Secretary Billy Hayes said: “The Liberal Democrats promised a Post Bank in their manifesto but have so far only taken work away from the Post Office and threatened its survival.
“A Post Bank could effectively operate as a Green Investment Bank while at the same time bringing trusted and accessible banking to communities across the UK along with vital revenue to the Post Office.
“We are bitterly disappointed that the Government has overlooked a golden opportunity to bring work to the Post Office.”

Tony Benn started in in 1968, National Girobank, and very successful it was too until Thatcher sold it to Alliance and Leicester.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/business ... _1_3429886

Re: ‘Missed opportunity’ on Post Bank
You have to admit that a Postbank would do more for the Counters Network than anything else that is being touted currently by those LIb Dem twats at BIS, such as the "Arkwright Syndrome" eg open all hours policy for PO's.
