424 post offices secretly closed

HUNDREDS of post offices have been secretly CLOSED - despite Govt promises to save them.

In a sneaky manoeuvre to get around announcing closures, 424 branches have been "temporarily shut"... for at least FOUR YEARS.

But they may have trouble re-opening - because 417 of the offices have been stripped bare and all their computers have been removed.

The scandal is revealed in new figures obtained from Post Office Ltd.

Labour business spokeswoman Nia Griffith said this was evidence of a "secret closure programme".

She added: "Post offices are being allowed to close by the back door. Communities are losing out."

The Communication Workers Union warned 9,000 more branches could shut if plans to privatise Royal Mail went ahead. Postal Minister Edward Davey refused to comment on the temporary closures.

But he said there would be no official programme to shut premises and insisted: "The Post Office works hard to re-open branches."
