A couple from Irthlingborough were amazed when they received a letter from London recently – because the sender had forgotten their address.

Despite the letter just being addressed to Roy and Meg York, Irthlingborough, it took just under a week to arrive at their home.

The couple, who live in Finedon Road, said Royal Mail and their local postman deserved a pat on the back for managing to deliver the letter without a house number or street name.

Mr York, 67, said he was delighted to have received the letter as it was from a former pupil of his from his time as the deputy headteacher at Avondale Junior School in Kettering.

Mr and Mrs York had only recently got back in touch with his former pupil through a mutual friend and she was writing to tell him about the birth of her son, but had forgotten his address.

Mr York said: “Over the years we have read articles in the Evening Telegraph which have recorded the shortcomings of the postal system with accounts of letters and cards arriving at their destination weeks, months or even years after being posted

“But we received delivery of the letter, which had been posted in north London on May 14 – some achievement by the staff and Royal Mail.

“I think it’s absolutely wonderful that they managed to get the letter to us, especially bearing in mind that they don’t sort the mail locally in Irthlingborough any more.

“I think that it is a very good achievement and we were very impressed, and all of our friends have been very impressed.”

A spokesman for the Royal Mail said: “This is yet another example of how our postmen and women go the extra mile to deliver for their customers.

“They use their knowledge and skills to get mail to its destination even against the odds.”
