Dave Ward opens postal conference

Deputy general secretary Dave Ward paid tribute to members' "continuing strength, courage and determination" over the past year as postal conference opened in Bournemouth this morning.

"The vast majority of our members are increasingly worried and concerned at what the future may hold, with some struggling to cope with both pace and the scope of change at work," he explained.

Difficult challenges already posed by business transformation had been made more so by management who had, Dave continued: "Recently had their heads turned by the prospect of privatisation.

"But we're confident the union can rise to the challenges ahead."

In a wide-ranging speech, Dave outlined how, with the right mixture of realism, strength and organisation the union, together, can both meet these challenges and overcome them.

In a busy morning, conference discussed and approved policy motions covering health benefits, pensions, annual leave, the shorter working week and Royal Mail's "World Class Mail" initiative.

Before delegates broke for lunch, CWU senior field organiser Lynn Browne gave a presentation explaining how, through a new organising and recruitment sub-committee, the postal executive has made this a key priority for the union.
