For those part timers that are regularly put on new walks then my advice would be if you cant get any pointers from someone who has already done the walk (always useful to find out shortcuts, where to park your car, where drop points are etc) then do your best on the your first day and get a feel of it but try and make a written note of all the roads on your walk. Then when you get home look at this great website:

this is better than google maps or streetmap.co.uk as it details house numbers. You should be able to suss out the best way to bag up your bundles and where to park if your driving.

Useful site, but you should not be advising Staff to use cars, it has been proven time and time again, the pitfalls are many and can cost you your job if it went wrong.

i am currently considering employment with royal mail as a postie/driver in nottingham and i was wondering if anyone knows if theres always loads of overtime as the position is part time or what the chances are of being made fulltime ?

To be fair there usually is at least some kind of overtime,but for part timers it is paid at the normal hourly rate until they go over 39/40 hrs.
Don't hold your breath about being made up to full time but tbf it depends on your office and their revision if they haven't had it yet.

or

when you have pouched off at the nearest PO

or

when you have returned all undelivered/undeliverable items back to the office

or

When your working hours run out.

Used to be but no so much anymore - although some places let you out earlier so you get people thinking you go quicker on Saturdays.

also if i finish my round early (before 2pm) but want to do overtime does my overtime begin from 2pm or when my round is finished ie 1pm.as im only on a p/t contract 9-2 whats the chances of me starting earlier for overtime?

Depends entirley on how the office operates.

Officially you cannot claim overtime till your contracted hours have elapsed - so if you have extra work given to you you cannot claim till you have gone past your finish time. Also if you finish early then under the P&M07 agreement you should get guidance from your manager.

Of course thats my office yours might be different.

Starting earlier for overtime - Not a chance in my office although plenty volunteer to do unpaid overtime by coming in before their start time. Best check with your manager on this if you want to be paid.

To be honest your first few months, if not years, don't get bogged down in what the agreements are, just make sure that your local rep keeps you informed, and you yourself are fully aware of anything you vote on. Once your feet are under the table and you have got your head round the day to day stuff, then start worrying about the geo-political stuff that goes on in the world of RM/CWU.

Just to give the direct answer in addition to Teebs' answer, P&M07 = Pay & Modernisation agreement, 2007 ( which like the most relevent agreements is in the downloads section of this site, but as Teebs has already said, get yourself used to the day to day stuff before you go looking for where they came from )

Remember that the bag weight matrix is based on ordinary conditions. The figures are lower if part of your walk involves walking uphill, plus I think when you climbing stairs. In both cases, your weighs should be much lower.

My bags are usually well below the guide matrix anyway. There is no rule to say it has to be up at the absolute maximum. It is false economy to have, lets say, have 3 really heavy bags instead of splitting that into 5. Heavy bags will slow you down, plus you are ruining your body. It may not effect you at first but over time it'll cause problems.

Whats the advice on this situation what would you of done ? I went to the nearest red postbox and put my undelivered parcels and mail in it. Could this possibly get me into troble.

You should have called the gaffer, they would have told you what to do. If you couldn't contact them for whatever reason then the undelivered mail should be endorsed, popped into the postbox and management contacted first thing on the next working day.

I did phone a manager , but there was no answer. I did write on the mail and parcels for example" no acess and my intials and time " if i couldn't deliver them . Then they they were placed in the post box.
