ROYAL Mail has paid out more than £100,000 in compensation for the loss, misdelivery and damage to parcels, packages and letters intended for Teesside customers.

The figure covers the financial years 2008-09 and 2009-10, as the number of complaints received and compensation paid is revealed.

In 2008-09, Royal Mail received 4,270 complaints from customers. Of those, 2,707 received compensation to the tune of £69,468 combined.

In 2009-10, the service received 4,090 complaints.

Of those, 2,893 customers received combined compensation of £46,4111.

Over the two years, Royal Mail paid out £115,879 to compensate customers whose items had been either lost, misdelivered or damaged.

A spokeswoman said: “Royal Mail constantly reviews security to ensure the continuing integrity of the mail operation and we have a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty.

“Anyone found to be guilty of theft can expect to be dismissed. We also seek to bring prosecution in the courts.

“The overwhelming majority of letters posted arrive safely at the correct destination but we remain vigilant to any risk to the operation, including any threat from criminals outside Royal Mail who target postmen and women to steal the mail they are carrying.”

She said the majority of postal workers took “huge care” over the mail entrusted to them.

And of course the newspaper wouldn't put things in perspective by mentioning how many billions of items Royal Mail delivers a few years.
