I think we all know that the offices that are ear marked for closure....will close and be relocated.Can not see Royal Mail backtracking on any of the proposals put forward.Leicester,Derby etc are doomed

Uncertain future for Nottingham's Royal Mail sorting office workers


ROYAL Mail workers in Notts face an uncertain future after plans were announced to close a number of sorting offices.

The proposals, which are the result of a fall in demand for services, would establish four main sorting offices, at Nottingham, Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Northampton.

Under the plans, about 550 jobs would be cut across the Midlands – and while it is unlikely any of these will be in Notts, bosses have refused to rule it out completely.

All post currently sorted at Derby would move to Nottingham, with workers given the option to move with the work or take voluntary redundancy.

No jobs are immediately at risk at the Nottingham sorting office, in Beeston, but a spokesman for the Communication Workers' Union said it would depend on whether workers from the Derby sorting office decided to follow the work or not.

"Nottingham shouldn't be looking at any redundancies, but if everyone at Derby does decide to follow the work, then that might have to be revised," he said.

"We're not looking at any job losses or new jobs being created at the moment."

As part of the proposed move, the Nottingham sorting office in Beeston would be equipped with new machinery.

The number of items posted each year in the Midlands has fallen by more than 400 million since 2006.

Paul Jobling, regional operations director of Royal Mail Midlands, said the proposal had been announced after months of consultation with the Communication Workers Union and the Unite Communication and Managers Association (CMA).

Mr Jobling said the company expected that all staff who wanted to remain in the business would be able to do so.

He said: "Royal Mail must review its mail-processing operations in the region and is undertaking a modernisation programme, aimed at ensuring a successful future for the letters and parcels business.

"This involves having the appropriate number of people in our business as well as deploying the latest technology and equipment. I would like to thank the CWU and Unite CMA for their valuable input over the last few months.

"We will continue to consult with both unions as they input further into these initial views and also have the opportunity to put forward alternative proposals. Our aim is to manage any reductions through natural attrition and voluntary redundancies."

When asked how the proposals would affect Nottingham directly, a spokeswoman for the Royal Mail said: "It depends on what people decide to do on an individual basis.

"Until we know if people want to move or whether they want to take voluntary redundancy, we cannot say one way or the other."

They already move the 2nd class post sorting from Derby to Nottingham in 2009 so it was pretty obvious Derby m/c was going!
