A campaign to save Tadley post delivery office has been stepped up.

Royal Mail announced on April 12 that the Newchurch Road office will be relocated to Basingstoke in the autumn.

In response, Tadley borough councillor Stephen West launched a campaign to pressure Royal Mail to scrap the move.

Royal Mail said in a statement it was searching for a depot to store undelivered mail, saving residents the journey to Basingstoke.

Senior external relations manager Richard Hall said: “We have not at this stage agreed a location in Tadley to provide this facility, but once we do it will be free of charge and customers will not have to travel to Basingstoke to collect mail.”

But Cllr West is calling for Royal Mail to clarify its plans following speculation that town post offices would be unable to cope with demand.

He said: “The post office in Mulfords Hill does not have the space or capacity to handle the large volumes of undelivered mail currently being handled by the Tadley delivery office.

“It is in the public interest that residents understand the true implications of the closure of the delivery office in Newchurch Road.”
