Monday to Friday only???

Post by POSTMAN »

* The Universal Service Obligation (USO):

The USO means that, under EU law, all citizens must have their mail collected and delivered at least once a day, five days a week.

Monday to Friday!!!I heard a little rumour about getting rid of Saturdays, job losses would be quite large, tons of savings all round.

Thoughts!!

I have to disagree.

The USO applies to 'every working day' which includes Saturdays.

The competition would queue up to do our job on a Saturday, and once they proved they could do it, they'd move in on the rest of the week.

Yes,i heard this rumour some time ago,and still a possibility in my book.
most of our firms were targeted for saturday delivery, but declined.
remember nothing is set in stone,if our competitors deliver on sunday, should we follow suit?
its's all about commercial viability,mr leighton says changes need to be made to "increase efficiency and productivity"
an obligation to the customer was all very well in a one horse race, but competition means we now have to focus on making a profit.

competition about to deliver

Post by F0zziebear »

TNT have already run trials and before the year is out they will be delivering. They have enough volume (currently 1.2bn) and have invested in sorting capacity of about 2.5bn items per annum. That is plenty to run their own delivery operation, and they will be delivering items that are more uniform and clearly addressed.

As for Saturday's the whole mail medium works best when people have time to read their mail. Bear in mind direct mail is by the largest section Saturday's and possibly Sunday's are the choice days.

Royal Mail does not currently offer a product that specifices a particular day of delivery at Mailsort 3 prices. This is what the industry wants and unless they offer it the competition will do. If the competition start tucking into the Mailsort 3 sector (approx. 5.5bn items) then RM will have serious problems.

Watch this space and be prepared to deliver your mail before church!

I'm not sure about the job losses unless the volumes fall. Surely, if there is the same amount of mail there would be roughly the same number of people delivering it?
Unless of course we finish early and can cope with the extra 20% per day that a loss of Saturdays would incur.

I have had several conversations with customers who don't even know if they get Saturday delivery or not! I think Saturday deliveries are unimportant to buisnesses and the general public but are very important to the competition. If we do lose Saturday - and I admit it would be nice - the final mile competition will arrive sooner.

If royal mail went to a monday to friday delivery that would mean 1 in six postmen would lose there jobs. And all the remaining postmen would have more mail to deliver at the begining of the week.

Could be wrong but read somewhere that the 6 day delivery was part of the Royal Mail licence and to change it would require government legislation. What I object to is the amount of TNT, Business Post, etc that we seem to deliver on Saturdays. If they want it delivered on a Saturday shouldn't they pay more for it? You try getting a courier to deliver anything on a Saturday and you have to pay a premium. Level playing field?

This is a blast from the past

We HAVE to deliver and collect 5 days a week, that's in our uso thingy.
Recently it was mentioned that we would go to 5 days by some postCON bird, but her comments were taken out of context and RM flatly denied that SAT deliverys were going.

We've got no chance in hell of not delivering on Saturdays.

You failed to mention these limited TNT trials only encompassed D2D items.

Interesting to note that the average TNT walk roughly equates to SIX RM walks all for the princely sum of.... wait for it.... £34.67.

There is no competition, even your ex employer idols refer to it as "cream skimming" unable to operate without exploiting the cross subsidy loopholes.

The research that was carried out show clearly that Mondays are essential to customers for delivery and collection of mail and saturays are the day they need that less.
