Closure of Princes Risborough post office could disadvantage elderly and infirm

THE PLANNED closure of a town’s post office could disadvantage many elderly and infirm people as well as threaten the future of a fire station.

THE PLANNED closure of a town’s post office could disadvantage many elderly and infirm people as well as threaten the future of a fire station.

The Princes Risborough delivery office will cease to function from August and the fact many of its current workers are part time firemen means the local fire station faces difficulty.

In future, people will have to travel to Aylesbury in order to collect undelivered mail and this is something which does not sit well with Princes Risborough Town councillor Gary Hall.

“Elderly or infirm people will find it extremely difficult to travel to Aylesbury.

“These people are also the most likely to have items delivered as they find it hard to get to the shops,” said Mr Hall.

“I understand they may want to sell it for economic reasons but what I’m suggesting is we come to a compromise. There are plenty of ready premises and units in the town.

“A number of the workers are retained firefighters and if they move they won’t be able to reach the station.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said the service was being reduced due to declining mail volumes and increasingly tough trading conditions.

“We need to respond to the huge growth in electronic communications and the resulting decline in overall mail volumes which in the UK means there are now 16 million fewer letters posted every day compared to five years ago.”

The spokesman added: “For customers who prefer not to visit the enquiry office in person Royal Mail offers a free re-delivery service which can be accessed online at http://www.royalmail.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or by calling the number on the card we leave.”

The delivery of mail will continue to meet Royal Mail’s specifications.

There will be no compulsory redundancies as a result of the move to Aylesbury.

- hourly trains, journey time 18 minutes. Buses too. :Very Happy
"A Royal Mail spokesman said the service was being reduced due to declining mail volumes ..." - that same old story.

Where do they find the time and energy for that?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

It will be the same for residents of Berkhamsted Herts whose mail will be delivered from the new Hemel Hempsted mail centre when it opens in the near future.

It works well. A suspect parcel bomb and they quickly change uniforms and deal with it before the DOM could dial 999. :nana
