Too true - but you have to step back in amazement to read their Union did NOT back their case and have to wonder why?

Was it because of the cost or lack of bottle? Either way it is a worrying prospect for any of our union reps who although in the right could be left out to dry - and that brothers is NOT Unity. At the very least they should receive an apology and compensation of the costs with interest.

The shop stewards are now going to London to try and get the union to cover their legal bill (approx 200k), I understand it could be a hunger strike!!

Those men are to be applauded.

Their union, on the other hand, should be ashamed.

Let's face it mate, some unions are just there to oil the wheels of capitalism, give opportunity for their leaders to suck up to the Labour Party hoping to get a safe Labour seat in parliament and the rights of the workers are some way down their list of priorities.

Yes, IWW, that does seem to be the case. In future, I will not vote in union elections for candidates who claim membership of the Labour party,
I see this as the only way we can safeguard ourselves from people whose principles will undoubtedly be compromised, and consequently, the members
betrayed by our representitives naked ambition.

I NEVER vote for anyone holding membership of the Labour Party. After all that has gone on in the last ten years, the only people who still remain in membership are either self-interested of very naive. As soon as I see in their notes that they remain in membership of a party which has appointed Leighton and Crozier, they've lost my vote. There's Billy Hayes banging on in Liverpool about Labour MP's not supporting the CWU while he slings thousands of pounds at them, then whinges that Conference refused to endorse that Wide Boy Alan Johnson as candidate for deputy leader of his party. Billy could do with getting out and about and meeting the members.

Yep, mate, Billy ought to get out more. Seriously though, that's a good point, both the general secretary, and the deputy general
secretary, should get out and meet as many of the grass roots members as possible. The link with the Labour party is doomed, the sooner they get
used to the idea, especially Billy, the better it'll be for all of us.

Billy visited our office towards the end of 2000. He said to me "I don't think the leadership of this union have ever been so out of touch with the members in my time with Royal Mail." I had some hope that things might change once Billy took over. What a disappointment he's been. I suppose I shouldn't have been too surprised.

WHAT A GREAT BATTLE THEY TAKE ON AND IF ANY UNION NEED TO BACK ANY CAUSE THEN THESE FIVE GOOD MEN AND TRUE SHOULD BE THE CAUSE!!!!!!!!!!! Morals. Faith. Guts. Pride. Determination. These Men should be given a MBE or a title of great giving to the people of the UK... Not some bastard who does n says the right thing at the ease of the Grey Suits and Establishment.....

Agree, we -or the CWU I should say- should be aware of the rulings/precidents of this case.
Come Sept. 4th- resuming IA? Further harassment of CWU reps?
