It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

And who pays the extra insurance premium for business use?

Can the postie claim mileage and how will this effect his tax situation?

The cost on wear and tear and increased mileage will effect the resale value of your car. Once again the RM approves of a practice that saves them money and costs the workers money.

IMHO anyone who uses their car on deliveries is a mug.

A little "dicky bird"tells me that RM are going to inforce the ban of useing cars nationwide making people use the vans or official RM cycle, they are not going to fall in to the trap every time IA rears its ugly head of us posties causing backlogs by withdrawing our"goodwill",its gonna cost 'em some dosh if they do go down this road IE.....new vans and extra acceleration drivers,me personally i cant see how they can police it.The management have banned the delivery staff from taking their own cars on delivery at my office and its given the office manager and his line managers a real headache.

Also the same "dicky bird" tells me that them new electric cycles are supposed to coming in as well,so perhaps the RM think it wont involve new duties and new vans, now that would be interesting seeing those cycles being used, its a busy town and a fair bit of industry around which brings lots of large commercial vehicles in.The H&S rep is gonna be busy i think.

I'd support RM imposing a no cars on delivery ban. Think of the hassle we can cause to managers. More Drop bags meas managers would have to run round blind supporting the drivers to get the bags out on time.
Then to counteract this, the business would have to create more driving duties. I stopped using my car 2 months ago. Wear and tear wrecked it. RM don't care that i've got to fork out for another motor, even though the job wrecked it.

Can't see Royal Mail banning cars permanently anywhere because of costs and while many willingly use them to complete their walks. It is up to individuals to stop doing so to protect their jobs.

If you have this RM so called "bond"it will not pay out for any damage to you car if you are carrying mail,it just covers the mail.I agree with cars being band,it'll create more driving duties, the police would have a field day if someone was unfortunate enough to involved in an accident and RM would drop you like a hot "potato"

Before our office was stopped from taking their cars i used to see delivery posties loading their car up with 8 or 9 pouches of mail in the boot and on the bag seat in full view to the public and cruisey you are correct it does wreck your cars.

I wish they would ban the use of private cars - it is the only way to stop some of the muppets in this office who can't see the wood for the trees.
The application form now demands that you have a current UK driving licence or the application doesn't proceed. Now that doesn't suggest RM is in any hurry for people to stop using their car OR they are going to supply more and more vans. Mopeds used to be a favourite at one time - until tragically a death on duty - the use of private mopeds was then stopped.

Looking at Posties post - that leaflet is a real humdinger - you do all this to use your car on duty and we will do Sweet FA and pay you Sweet FA - a really, really good deal.

Can'treally see the point in using your car when you end up paying more out in fuel and the wear and tear on the vehicle. I know of 2 lads in our office who have had accidents and 1 of those has had his car written off. :d'oh!

I never use a car for deliveries, an easy decision for me as I don't own a car. Many who do use cars must do so as a result of the increased weight of mail over the years, worsened last August with the basic weight step being increased from 60g to 100g. Long gone are the days of taking out a single pouch, and loading everything into the boot of your car can be an easier option than rushing trying to get everything ready for the van that takes them out and then going backwards and forwards to and from the drop off point(s). Regarding security of mail, locked out of sight in a car boot is probably safer than at drop off points which, despite what RM claims, in my experience have all been unlocked and nearly all within sight of the street.

i stopped using mine for various reasons.
interesting they insist on business cover.i added a few miles into mine to keep things legal and it didnt add loads
however i have plenty NCD & clean licence.
wonder how much that would cost the younger drivers!! realistically i see it dieing out as a practice
