A PARCEL bomb found at the Royal Mail depot in Kirkintilloch last month was real, it has been revealed.

The parcel, which was believed to have contained a fake nail bomb, was intercepted by workers at the delivery office in the early hours of Saturday, March 26.

Police have now confirmed the package, which was addressed to Celtic manager Neil Lennon, was “designed to cause real harm to the person who opened it”.

Workers at the depot in Old Mill Park have been warned to be on their guard for further packages and are currently receiving advice and guidance from the police.

A spokesperson for Royal Mail said: “Royal Mail takes the security of mail and our people very seriously indeed. We have robust security measures in place for dealing with suspect packages and are extremely vigilant.

“Royal Mail is continuing to assist Strathclyde Police with its investigations.”

It is believed the package was addressed to Celtic’s training ground, in Lennoxtown.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell said: “In the face of these attacks, we will continue to liaise with the police in order to ensure the safety and security of Neil Lennon and all our staff. It is an intolerable state of affairs which must end.”

The package was the second device sent to the Celtic manager last month after another was intercepted at a post office in Saltcoats.

Two further devices were also sent to QC Paul McBride and Celtic fan and ex-MSP Trish Godman.

Detective Chief Superintendent John Mitchell, head of crime division, said: “Whoever has done this has not only put the person the package was addressed to in danger, but they have also put a large number of mail room staff in harms way.

“We are acutely aware of the alarm these types of incidents can cause. That is why we have put a full plan in place that involved giving advice and guidance to Royal Mail workers and other mail room staff.”
