Royal Mail set to reject union plan and press on with mail centre closure

Royal Mail chiefs are set to reject a union plan to keep the East London Mail Centre open and forge on with plans to close it by next spring, according to MP Jim Fitzpatrick.
The MP for Poplar & Limehouse visited the centre in Twelvetrees Crescent, Bromley by Bow this morning to speak to Royal Mail directors about their intention to close it and move its east London processing work to a centre in Romford.
Royal Mail also plans to close its South London Mail Centre.
The Communication Workers Union put an alternative plan to the company last Tuesday to keep the Bromley-by-Bow centre, that has more than 700 workers, open and to review its future after next year’s Olympics.
John Ayres, the area’s CWU rep, argues that despite decline in mail volumes nationwide, the union would be able to demonstrate that east London is a growth area in light of its new E20 postcode, the Olympic Park developments and the Government’s introduction of a business Enterprise Zone.
Following his meeting, Mr Fitzpatrick, who was visiting with Jon Cruddas, MP for Dagenham and Rainham, said: “It was a very useful meeting but it has been clearly indicated that they [the Royal Mail] are not going to change their minds.
“The centre will close but they are confident that there will be no compulsory redundancies. “It is going to be painful, but east London MPs will want to make sure its as painless a process as possible and look after deliveries for residents in east London as well.”
In response, the union will now ballot its members at the centre and three others in London, as well as the Rathbone Place delivery office, on May 6 over possible industrial action with the result to be announced on May 20.
The East London Advertiser has been told the Royal Mail will be making a comment this afternoon.
The company has argued that it has “significantly” more mail processing capacity in inner London than it needs.

Maisymoon, are you now unemployed,or did you get the oppportunity to transfer? When your office closed ,were you threatened with compulsory redunancy?Thats whats happening at the london mail centres due to close, and if it happens there,it will start happening all over the country.

Fair enough fishtank, you are entitled to your opinion,so you obviously think the union the union are not telling the truth, because this is what they have told us.

I am not talking for fishtank but even the Union have not said that RM have threatened compulsory redundancy. What the Union have said is that they cant see how Royal Mails plan will work unless they have compulsory redundancy. I tend to agree with the CWU but it does not alter the fact that RM have not YET threatened compulsory redundancy. After all from their point of view its not beyond the bounds of possibility that they will get enough Volunteers for VR, improbable I think but not impossible.
Also just to confirm my position I will vote against CRs and I will strike if the ballot goes that way.

It's not an opinion...it's a fact.vila465 wrote:Fair enough fishtank, you are entitled to your opinion,so you obviously think the union the union are not telling the truth, because this is what they have told us.
No-one has been threatened with Compulsory Redundancy.
The business thinks it can close both the mailcentres without the need for Compulsory Redundancies.
The Union disagrees.
I don't think the union is lying but they are not infallible and could be wrong so i have an open mind.
I am also not naive enough to believe that the union would be above using fear tactics particularly the threat of losing your job to organise industrial action...they have form...as to be fair most unions do.
I am also not naive enough to believe a word senior Royal Mail management utter.
If the union had felt the same way in 2009 we might not have been in this mess.

Re: RM set to reject union plan and press on with MC Closure
If i might add to be fair although i believe that the union and in particular the LDC are painting the worst case scenario....i am not saying it's the wrong thing to do....just that i recognise it for what it is.
