Uniform tax rebate!

Anybody claimed for their cleaning of uniform?

Is it easy to do yourself or let these guys take the hassle out of it and let them have 20%

Hmm might be worth a shot then, but i though RM already sorted it for us, i'm sure someone here will know.

Its already built into our tax code when working for rm, we get about an extra 200 allowance each year for uniform cleaning as negotiated by the union with hmrc

Easier to claim it yourself if its not been added to your tax code.

1. Find number for tax office (or call centre)
2. Pick up the phone & dial number
3. Wait about 10 min for call to be answered
4. Tell them your NI num / name /address
4. Tell them you work for RM as postie / driver / mc hammer etc. You dont have laundry facilities at work & you are required to wash your own uniform.

Job done. They will change your tax code to allow for extra £60 tax free (which is really just £12)

5. If you have worked for RM for longer you can reclaim upto 5 or 6 years back. Ask for a cheque to be sent to you for previous years uniform washing.

Dont spend all the money in one go

thats cos they are waiting to see if you will last 6 months and if you do you MAY get one.

i got my all my uniform at the start of my second week from starting. 2 pairs of shoes (cat trainers, magnum boots), 2 t-shirts, 2 shirts, red fleece, elmer fudge hat, 2 sets of trousers, waterproof trousers and the new waterproof jacket

but i asked for a pair of shorts and another hat about 3 months in and still waiting...

Tax relief for specialist tools or clothing

If you must pay for the cost of repairing, cleaning or replacing this type of specialist clothing yourself and your employer doesn't reimburse you, then you are entitled to tax relief. However, you cannot claim for the initial cost of buying this clothing.

What about uniforms
You can get tax relief on the cost of repairing, cleaning or replacing a uniform if:

it's a recognisable uniform that shows you've got a certain sort of job - like a nurse or police uniform
your employer requires you to wear it while you're working
you've got to pay for it yourself


Before you contact HMRC you’ll need to have all the following information to hand:

name and address of your employer
what expenses you are claiming for, for example the costs of laundering your uniform
the industry you work in
your occupation or job title
details of any laundry or cleaning services provided by your employer
details of payment or vouchers provided by your employer to cover laundry or other costs

but you should get some recompense for wearing your own clothes--this at least used to be the case in the 'old days' when we had to wait 6 weeks for our made to measure uniform, speak to your union guy!
