What planet are you on Dave....relatively small number of staff?
We are talking about one sixth of delivery staff as well as processing and ancillary staff and how exactly could natural wastage account for that.
Would we phase in a 5 day week one duty at a time when somebody retired....30 years should about cover it. :cuppa

chrisj wrote:I dont know where this person got the idea that 1 in 6 will lose their job??? And if I lose my job, so what? There will be other jobs... There is very little to lose if you are 24-hour postman at the bottom of the food chain in a industry where seniority (which is illegal BTW) is at the root of some of the major problems.

Some of the old boys/girls need to move into the 21st century. As soon as Royal Mail is privatised, they will lose the a whole lot more than just their seniority.

There will be redundancies, some will go because they cannot accept change, some will ose thier job because they are not efficient, some post will not be advertised as some offices will be working at a higher efficiency level.

And as I said before, there will still be saturday staff doing other things... We will still work 5 days a week, perhaps less absence as we currently have a lot of scivers on saturdays (& other days) anyway. Floating jobs are not allows done well because they are not accountable. More people will have their own walks (hooray) which is what customers want and provides more consistency and more local (micro-local) knowledge.

1 in 6 job losses is completely inaccurate - there will still be cover for absence and holidays. Can you explain 1 in 6 job losses?

For the most part I'm in agreement with you. I think different posters in this thread are interpreting 'job losses' in different ways. There will be less jobs required, but that doesn't de facto equal staff forced out of work. I'm not a Union man but I would be very much against ANY compulsary redundancies. The huge cost savings for RM would be instant and would increase over time as surplus staff left the company and were not replaced. The REAL question is would you accept a higher daily workload for a decent weekend like most working people enjoy? Some people would, others wouldn't, which is fair enough.

Of course it wouldn't happen overnight and no one should expect it to. With normal retirements(we do have a very eldery workforce), a decent VR package, early retirements, and people leaving of their own accord for other jobs/careers etc it certainly wouldn't take anywhere near thirty years!! I can't speak for other offices, but where I work we've had between 30-40% staff turnover in the last seven years.

What concerns me about the talk of Monday to Friday and the job losses is that the CWU have gone a long way to promote part time working. Their "heads in the sand" approach is wiping out full timers. The only way to protect full time jobs is to go Monday to Friday. The fall in mail volumes, if it is really true, started a long way back. In fact, it must have startde BEFORE SDD came. If this is the case, then why did the union, along with CMA AND RM, not go to the government and push for a 5 day service, to protect jobs? Seems to, and many others I suspect, that the CWU are in alliance with RM as there can be no other logical answer as to why they would encourage p/t working over f/t.

Packets and parcels aside, customers don't seem too fussed about having a delivery on a saturday (in my experience) because by the time we get to most it's too late to get to the bank to pay in a cheque or whatever, i think a collective scrapping of mail delivery and possibly a special saturday service (which can be covered by overtime or such like ) would be a good idea. In our office Saturday's are one of the worst day's as people are reluctant to work their days off and this will only get worse with later starts.

This is already happening in our office. I turned down the last Saturday I had off, because of just that. Later starts, with later finish and LONGER attendance. No good for anyone :no no I have no idea what the CWU were thinking of. :confused

I've always felt Saturdays could simply be packets/parcels and SDs, maybe even some sorting and prep ready for Monday, done by a rota skeleton crew as OT.

natural wastage can easily be achieved. F@@k all the rounds so we drop dead after 10 years service. Oh yes thats the route they are allready taking. So glad i am not old and can just about manage the work load. :nana

The Area Del Rep for my office regularly delivers on a Saturday - The local rep is on a 4 day week so does not work Saturdays.

5.30 I wish - our place want to move it to 6:45 from 6.00. :cry :cry

There is already a motion to remove the need for Saturday deliveries going through parliament. Wouldn't surprise me if it was the future buyers of RM who put the government up to it, to cut costs, or possibly the government trying to make us more attractive to a buyer.

As far as i'm aware there is NOTHING in the postal bill regarding going to a 5 day week.
Unless anyone else knows something.
But if it was going down i'm sure it would be on here.
