Jean Chase-Long submitted this picture of postal workers in Portsmouth’s main sorting office taken more than a century ago.
It features her grandfather (marked with a cross). Mrs Chase-Long lives on the site of this old Southsea church, but is not quite sure where exactly.
It is St Bartholomew’s which was built at the junction of Campbell Road and Outram Road in the late 19th century.
It was demolished after the area was bombed in the Second World War and replaced by St Bartholomew’s Gardens where Mrs Chase-Long lives.
She said: ‘I often wonder whereabouts my house is? I think Elm Grove may be behind the horse and cart and is that snow on the ground?’
The Campbell Road area, originally known as Havelock Park, was developed from 1858 as a residential suburb of Southsea.
It still has a leafy character but is very distinct from the layout of Thomas Ellis Owen’s Southsea.
In the late 19th century, three formal terraces were built in Campbell Road and Havelock, Lorne and Livingstone roads were laid out in the grounds of the former Froddington House.
