A POSTAL worker who pilfered parcels was ordered to pay £476 and carry out 300 hours of unpaid work.

Clint Selby, of Overpool Road, Ellesmere Port, appeared at Chester Magistrates Court where he admitted four charges of theft relating to 41 packets belonging to Royal Mail while he was employed at the Ellesmere Port delivery office.

The first theft was in August 2010, when he stole a packet containing two LoveFilm rental DVDs.

Between November 29, 2010, and January 7, 2011, he took 34 packets.

A third charge related to a further three packets stolen during that same period.

A further two packets containing £55 cash were taken on January 7.

Selby, 33, must carry out the work within the next 18 months and he also received a community order for 12 months.

He was ordered to pay compensation of £76 to Royal mail and prosecution costs of £400.

Credit was given for his guilty plea by bringing the sentence down from a custodial sentence.

A spokesman for Royal Mail said: “Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women, who are honest and hard-working and who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely.

“We will always seek to prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust.

“Royal Mail customers should be confident in our services and systems, but where we are alerted to problems, either through our own stringent checks or from information supplied by our customers, we take decisive action to investigate.”
