Re: POLL:Get rid of Saturday deliveries?
We only work 5 days a week now! Why would there be job losses? Just means everyones day off is Saturday and they'll be more work to do mon-fri....perhaps due to the extra workload rounds will be made shorter creating more deliveries and more work. Just a thought...

When you have a day off now...who does your walk?mrpostman85 wrote:We only work 5 days a week now! Why would there be job losses? Just means everyones day off is Saturday and they'll be more work to do mon-fri.
If we were all off on Saturday would he/she need to do your walk?
Would that someone not be out of a job?
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Ummmmm - Yes we do a 5 day week - but Royal Mail delivers 6 days a week - there would be job losses because instead of covering for instance 6 x 30 duties you would only need 5 x 30. That means you no longer need Day off covers. You will need reserves to cover sickness and annual leave but if everyone has the same day off why would you need cover staff.
Maybe in a perfect world if we went to a 5 day delivery RM would adjust the rounds to cope with increased workload but then there are one or two things against that:. If they did adjust the current walks and make them smaller to cope with the higher workload then there would be no business reason to go to 5 day weeks - don't forget wages are ALWAYS the biggest cost to a business. Would RM be willing to reduce delivery spans just to keep on more staff, of course the act of changing the deliveries is itself a cost that would need to factored.
Sorry but if we did go down to 5 day deliveries we would have to lose at least the same amount of staff as currently do Day off Cover duties, and we would have to absorb the extra workload caused at no extra costs. Also not being rude to anyone but if they don't believe there will be a cost to get a Mon - Fri delivery week, then their view of RM and how it operates, is perhaps a little naive.

Re: POLL:Get rid of Saturday deliveries?
Understood...I guess I'm clutching a straws...altho I think with our office and the way it's run it would work without job loss but then no offices are the same! I personally don't mind working Saturday the only thing I resent is working so late...a shorter Saturday would be nice...maybe some kind of reduced service? I couldn't care less what hours I work mon-fri but I play football on Saturday which is now starting to conflict with work...it feels the job is now starting to consume more and more ofmy life out of work and I know I'm by no means a minority when I say this!

SA is only compulsary if you sign for it. All OT (SA or Pressure) is voluntary, until you sign for the SA. That's why SA is paid slightly better than Pressure OT. Because once you sign for it, you have to give notice (I think it's 28 days) before stopping it (either by you or the Manager). If you don't want to do it any more, just give notice that you're stopping your SA, work your notice, and then you can just do your contracted hours.

Re: POLL:Get rid of Saturday deliveries?
Try writing a polite letter, stating that you no longer wish to perform your SA, and are therefore giving 28 days notice, after which you'll just be performing your contracted hours. And see what happens. If your DOM refuses to accept it, ask to see a copy of the agreement, between Management and the CWU, stating that overtime is now compulsary. As far as I'm aware, no such agreement exists. If I'm right, and there's no agreement to produce. Then just go to your ADR, and ask for help.

Well since Minister for Postal Affairs, Edward Davey, said:
“The number one reason we are taking action is to ensure that the universal postal service is protected in the face of these challenges and that Royal Mail can keep delivering and collecting letters 6 days a week at an affordable, one-price-goes-anywhere tariff.

Re: POLL:Get rid of Saturday deliveries?
Yes. To me it's a no-brainer. Royal Mail cut out a huge amount of costs and all the delivery staff get a proper weekend, would be able to go for a drink on Friday evenings and not be falling asleep by 9pm on a Saturday night. Very few people need or want post on a Saturday anyway. A reduction in staff numbers doesn't have to mean redundancies. As staff leave or retire they are simply not replaced. No member of staff would be worse off financially. Daily mail volumes would naturally be higher, but I believe most delivery staff would accept this trade off for a decent weekend.

No it wouldn't have to mean that providing the Union negoiatated correctly with RM in assuring no compulsary job losses. Natural wastage would soon account for the relatively small number of surplus staff. Plus RM would be making instant savings by only operating vans five days a week, and bearing in mind the current price of fuel, that's a huge saving.
