Royal Mail Group’s operating profit increased 26% on the previous year.
Half-year results for 2010-11 see Group revenue falling from £4,575m to £4,402m, blamed on the decline in traditional mail volumes.
With increasing competition from rival operators and electronic media, improved efficiency and further progress in modernisation have been introduced to help ensure the company remained profitable at an operating level.
Royal Mail’s regional modernisation programme saw in excess of £10m invested in new technology and equipment.
This included deploying the latest generation sorting technology in both the Mail Centre in Mallusk and the Donegall Quay site in Belfast. Alongside this, Royal Mail embarked on the systematic rollout of a major operational change programme that involved postmen and women adapting to new, more efficient and flexible ways of working.
The Northern Ireland Mail Centre achieved a Bronze Award for its work on the ‘World Class Mail’ programme. The programme drives up performance in areas such as safety, quality of service, efficiency and people development and works by actively engaging frontline staff.
Royal Mail says the Mail Centre is now progressing towards Silver and Gold standards.
Latest Quality of Service figures show that a total of 93.7% of First Class stamped and metered mail was delivered the next working day after posting — ahead of the 93% target.
Second Class stamped and metered mail achieved a 99% performance, ahead of the target of 98.5% for delivery within three working days after posting.
The size of the Post Office network in Northern Ireland remained steady at approximately 495 branches but revenues from traditional business, including benefit payments via the Post Office Card Account, continued to decline.
The Government announced a £1.34bn funding package over four years and pledged there will be no closure programme. Parcelforce Worldwide maintained its revenues at £399m for the year, while its operating profit rose by 42% to £17m.
Parcelforce Worldwide in Northern Ireland delivered excellent performance and strong customer service levels over the course of the year.

Must be two parcelforces in Northern Ierland.
Because the one we have used, was not what we would call good but any standard.
