Being disciplined for doing job right. *Update*

Post by Listonosz »

Ok, since shared vans were introduced in November I have constantly gone over my time. I've had numerous conversations with manager stating that the rounds too long and that I don't want bthe overtime. Needless to say response is always 'computer says it can be done' 'bear with us'. Anyway my partner and I have finally had enough so we now work to our time. Couple of weeks ago left some mail in office, (after conversation with manager). As the day draw on we realised we had still taken out too much mail with us and cos we didn't want to work over we fetched a couple of bundles back to office. No managers in office when we got back so I left a note in managers office explaining what we had done. (This is in agreement with conduct code which states 'if you can't complete delivery for any reason you must inform manager by returning to office or by telephone'.

Next morning we are taken upstairs to explain our actions. Week later another fact finding meeting with manger and union rep. Tommorrow another meeting to answer a charge of 'unexcused delay of mail' I've constantly pointed out that I've acted in accordence with RM's conduct code. Manager is miffed cos I didn't phone (pointed out my phone is broke and van share partner has no phone) but we still returned to office. Anyway yesterday I recieved a letter regarding meeting tommorrow wherein manager states he will be refering to these documents (he's attached my signed copy of the PDA training) insinuating that there is no reason I couln't phone the office. Even though we acted in agreement with conduct code and returned to office and informed manager by leaving a note on his desk.

Now I'm being taken down the conduct code yet they refuse to acknowledge the part which states that if we can't complete delivery we must return to office.

Needless to say I've had enough, Off work with stress. What do I do?

Added on 22 APR, Manager issued me with a serious warning which will be on file for the next two years. Any further disciplinary action could lead to dismissal. Needless to say I have appealed, again quoting appendix 3 of RM's conduct code.

CWU rep came into meeting with me last week, he'll be there tommorrow to. He says RM don't have a case but I don't understand why RM are pursuing it.

I wonder do other companies do things like that. I mean too much work and conduct code and all that crap. All people want to do is finished work on time not over.

Because they can, they can do what they want irrespective if it is morally wrong. There is no come back for a manager if you win something on appeal...something that needs to change.

RM want employees who are scared for their jobs and who will make the unachievable achievable. They don't want anybody who rocks the boat.

We are in a difficult climate where Royal Mail seems to be imploding with the help of the government and it feels harder than ever to stand up for what is right.

I am also off work with stress and am trying to arrange a meeting with the Area Manager and Area Rep to try to prove that I am a victim of bullying and harassment by our DOM for the crime of doing the job correctly and like you, not wanting to work over my time.

Unless you are in this stressful position it is hard for your colleagues to understand and they actually make it worse as most of them are either afraid or stupid and help to create this false situation by coming in early, not taking breaks etc.

I would say to you to try and stay strong and hope that your rep is forceful and articulate as to rubbish their accusations.

Give your rep as much info as you can and fight this injustice as hard as you can.

Good luck with it.

A couple of things come to mind :hmmmm

1. Why was there no Manager in the office ? (If this is like my office they have bunked off early)

2. PDA. When i had training at no point was i shown how to use the phone application but only the scanning side of things ?
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

That's the point tho isn't it April. People are not trained properly to use the PDAs. Or anything else for that matter. When I was first put in locker, i was thrown in at the deep end, and had to pick it up as i went along. Can you imagine the amount of delivery cards that were there to be scanned at the end of a week :whistle

I have no idea how to use the Phone bit on the PDA,i don't even think the office number is programmed into it.

The managers seems to be acting the arse, there is no need for it ffs.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Nope :Very Happy

For some reason my PDA used to turn to a blue numbered screen which i assumed was the phone application but i never tried to use it. If listonosz has not had training using that part of the PDA and they have no working phone then how can they contact the office. Any port in a storm etc.

you have to ring the number that is on the little card you received when you had your initial PDA training
they then put you through to your office.

they might try to persue it - because as you said he showed you a signed copy of your PDA training indicating that you were aware of how to do this

they dont give a toss and are just out to get you one way or another

they need to explain things better

The op is going to possibly hit a problem with the pda training document he has signed, if it states on there that he was trained how to use phone and he then signed it but wasn't then he is in trouble as that's all the proof they will need

Now question for op is does the cradle for the pda work in your van?
