I used to be one of the early people. Not hours early but 30mins, sometimes 45mins. A couple of weeks ago I was rushing around, trying to do everything as fast as possible, got a pile of abuse from a customer for posting her mail at 12.20pm. Her usual postman apparently gets there much earlier. Something clicked, I thought what's the point. Since then I've gone in on my start time, done everything by the book, prepped d2ds invidually (not put them inside of each other). Redirections, missorts, oversize packets are never ready by the time missort run comes in. I've never felt happier, and Mr Bank Balance is a bit happier too. In fact i'd probably be skipping round if it wasn't for the weight. Brothers and sisters, don't start early.
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

This thread is fantastic.I know we blame the union HQ for the 2010 agreement and all of it's shortcomings. However it is here because of our lunatic members. In case anyone isn't sure of what I am on about :

Russell1973 and Sharpjambo should hang their heads in shame. You lot have only got yourselves to blame for your brothers having to come in early to get the job done. Both of those managers are ripping the pish out of you lot and you just stand by and do nothing. They were both in my office last year telling us all how they had beaten Hamilton. They didn't last for more than a fortnight with our lot

You may be right.but until there is something like a clocking in and out system then it will go on and on.
Very true , 'the village idiot' is hardly a new concept, but they do appear to have been breeding :cuppa still ,we'll all get what they deserve, and the dippy farts will blame the rest of us :chuckle

I'd say it's half and half in our office.

One half come in early so they can get out early, and then finish early; the other half are either slower at preping or there's not enough prep time and need to come in earlier to be going out on time.

What difference will that make? The same people who sign in an hour early now will clock in an hour early.
No you misunderstood.Fine if they clock in a hour early, but having to clock out on time.....I know if that happened, and I dont come in early to start,I wouldnt want to waste an hour of my time and then waste another hour coz ive finished early and get lumbered with an extra bit of a duty or sorting.Ive worked at a place with clock cards and a i.d swipe card(wonder if thats why the i.d cards came in?)and you rarely got people starting before their time.Yes you got people coming in 30 mins or so early, but apart from the apprentices no-one started until their time. Also and Im not a manager by the way,it would stop the piss takers who come in late every day and get away with it.We have one person(brown nose par excellance) who gets in a hour late everyday, sod all is said and goes home well before his time as he really does run.And I mean run.Another persons car broke down,he was late,1st time ever for him and he gets the usual "anymore lateness and we will have to have councilling etc" talk.
You know, it's about time we had some form of clocking in & out method, so that we can stick it to the guvnors why we may be struggling with workloads while others who do the same duties are doing okay. I mean, this is the 21st century, ffs!

Blimey, I was using clocking in cards well over 20 years ago, but here in RM we're still using signing in sheets -- some bloody modernisation, that is.
We posties do things differently, but we still get shot at!

h i understand wot your all saying but in most jobs staff come in early and leave late for no reward !!! i surpose you see it as a factory clock in and out situation ?? trouble is days arnt the same so i think either the steam of post needs to be a lot more even though the week and manged better ! or it is actepted that we are in a fluid situation?? i dont personel come in early but will finish the job most days ? as a float man if i can achive this someone on a regualur round should have no trouble

I used to come in early and take my car, but as more and more got put on me and my car was creaking from the weight I started to wonder why I was doing do and started to see the overall picture about trying to preserve jobs.

The only problem seeing the light is that only a few others have seen it too and that makes it easy for managers to bully you.

Others have tried to do the job properly, but then have been questioned about their prep rate or speed on delivery and are too afraid to stand up to them.

It's easy to say stand up to them, but it's really hard if you are in the very small minority and have no rep in your office.

I myself are going through a tough time now with being bullied about prep rate because I have cut off a few times.

I don't blame people for buckling under the harassment as you need the majority of your colleagues to stand strong with you.

I think the Union missed a trick at the last agreement by not insisting that all cars were banned even before the Van sharing business as offices like ours are a long way from that stage and they should have insisted that nobody was allowed in more than 15 mins before their time and only to have a coffee then.

Sure it would pee some off initially, but they would come to enjoy taking their break etc and if they couldn't complete their duty then they would have plenty of colleagues in the same boat.

I reckon we would have had to have hours put into our office if we all did the job properly, but sadly people are making the unachievable look achievable and leaving their colleagues to be s**t on quite honestly.

If you're part-time casual then it's almost impossible not to work for free at some point - that is, if you want to keep your job. I appreciate that the forum idealists will be along to tell me that that need not be the case, it's idiocy on behalf of those who do, etc., but when you're disposable, it doesn't really make sense to attract anybody to you by rocking the boat. It's for this reason that Royal Mail use part-time temporary staff so widely. You can intimidate and threaten these people, and there's little recourse. I am stronger than most but even I cannot win all the time when it's me against the world, and when I'm vulnerable.

I've started to give up.

This Debate is a constant argument in our office... my contracted hours is 5am-3pm so i get to see all the comings and goings. We have a small handful of staff who come in bang on 6.15 and then we have majority who amazingly roll in anytime from 5.30am onwards! By the time the 6.15 staff get in the idiots who came in early have prepped there rounds. We also operate a row of door to doors a day policy and these same idiots still feel the need to prep all 4 rows of door to doors on a saturday (like the good old days) If that isnt bad enough we also have people who come in on a SUNDAY and prep there following weeks door to doors.. and if thats not enough ive even returned back late on a saturday to find a postie with his wife and kids throwing next weeks door to doors in!

Its a great feeling when these clowns come in early to find that theres nothing for them to throw in as our multi million pound (never break down) sequence sorting machines have indeed....broken down!

As is the case in every office its the 6.15 starters who get the harassment for not pulling there weight and been accused of going slow and playing the game!!

Call me sad but if i ever leave or even better win the lottery ill get great pleasure in going into work on the sunday and ripping out those who have prepped all there door to doors and just dumping the lot on the floor at there fitting!! be like my version of supermarket sweep....

I guess It's just the human condition. You will always get insecure half wits who will lick the bosses arse. PT'ers who come in 2hrs. early and throw off packets ,and pt'ers who come in 2hrs. early and throw off other PT walks. What can you do if some folks feel born into slavery?PS. I've tried talking to them ,but they seem incapable of understanding even simple logic and reason  Lets face it, a fair percentage of delivery staff are extremely compromised in the IQ area,so maybe we should just let them cut their own throats :hmmmm

Funny as f**k.
Note to self,if you're feeling down, read this thread to cheer yourself up.
I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

one guy that comes in 45 mins early every day has been seen running on several occasions.. his round is well known to be 4 hours 40 min and believe it or not when office was geo routed a few years back even offered to take more.. To make matters even worse they offered him a van to which he stupidly accepted meaning now he has to take every small/medium/large packet on his round!

when he is preparing to go on annual leave the whole office banters ( yes one of the few things still slightly surviving) about which sucker is going to have to cover his round!! Gladly since i last did it we have had this new dim come in so ive denied all knowledge of even knowing it!! Funniest thing is the people who are the main contenders for this monster have even resorted to booking the same annual leave as this guy just to guarantee themselves not having to do it...
