Couldn't agree more Rhino, they certainly seem to be softening Royal Mail up for TNT and co to get their grubby little mits on it.
Well Royal Mail belongs to us the workers and the public and as much as the government and RM management and the city would like they will not be able to privatise it without a fight.
They now realise that to set up a rival network would be impossible seeing as RM is subsidising the competition 2p for every letter we handle for them, however it is not time to get complacent as there is still the strong possibility they will go for a railway style privatisation with royal mail tendering out each office or postcode area to the cheapest bidder meaning massive profits for city fat cats and our conditions will no doubt go down the drain as the union will have to deal with dozens of different scab companies all trying to undercut one another.
Management will not ease up on the attack if anything it is going to get worse and with the prospect of the tories gaining power the battle will only get harder.
However the recent solidarity has surprised me at how much fight we still have so lets not get disheartened as we stand to gain a lot if we play our cards right. We have all got a role to play and cannot leave it to the Oxfords and Southends(whom I have the utmost respect)out there to do it all for us.

:lfo Having been a RMT/NUR member for 9 years , I couldn't agree more , the idea is to knock the stuffing out of people / soften them up for privatisation . We had a six week strike in '89, it wasn't necessarily a right wing management's right wing right to manage v a left wing union , it was about fragmentation . That's why renewal was seperated from maintenance , which can be one and the same thing , they didn't want a organised union , building firms are tories to a man , mgt have actually come to blows out of frustration in the genteel setting of boardrooms . Leighton's tried for privatisation twice , a city plc is the one and only idea , any ideas like team working , revised attendance procedure with a illegal no DDA protection are ONLY on the backburner. That dog food eating , morris dancing , bell-ringing , church going, egotistical deluded CRETIN wanted to play the Victorian Millowner . The battle has only just started that's why people like me left the railway because we were sick of the trench warfare , eventually those companies realised it was better to WORK with the union. A moderate USDAW rep said we detest leighton , everything about him goes against everything we stand for , just american full stop. 'Walmart the greatest the company in the world " , so great it has 45+ law suits outstanding for dubious practices . the Tories are too split over Europe and don't like his quasi Blairite style. There's a perfectly good Tory Party in Power it's called New Lie-bour and it's one party state right wing ,tanky T*** in charge as PM. :lfo :cfo We could also do without that con-man New Labour Apologist as CWU GS in charge either ?Wild Cat wrote:Couldn't agree more Rhino, they certainly seem to be softening Royal Mail up for TNT and co to get their grubby little mits on it.

The cry should be "Solidarity" - it worked for others in the past and it is as true today as it ever was.
The sad thing is that throughout the workplace you see petty signs of fellow workers sneakily trying to steal a march on his/her fellow worker. It may only be a small thing but take for example the current practice of making people stay behind until the work plan start time - OK it was an agreed work plan and so in the spirit of solidarity you would expect everyone to abide by it - but no - you get people sneaking out of the office to deliver mail before their official start time so that they can get back early for ghost docket.
There is total selfishness amongst some of the newer elements of the workforce which is quite staggering.

Agree with you totally DVBUCK.In an office of about 110 walks where most people are on board there are still about half a dozen pig headed mugs who come in early, fly out early and continue to carve up the job.It has been explained to them over and over again that we are fighting to protect our jobs, but all they do is bury their heads in the sand and think short term. The minute they get any abuse they run crying to the managers so now there is a seething resentment and hatred of these people who are looked on as strike breakers. The only reason they don't cross the picket line is because they are scared too,not because they believe in the cause.
Was a bit worried when talks started that everything would crumble but glad to see that most staff have dug in for the long haul.Whatever they try makes us stronger and more determined.

I wasn't worried about the initial impact of the strike action but I was a bit worried about the follow on if these talks failed, however there is still maximum support to strike again if necessary and that is heartening. Of the 160 staff here only 4 went in and 3 of those were non union members, the 4th was an acting manager - which says it all really! Favouritism is rearing its ugly head again here after we've already addressed the problem once, so it looks like we're going to have to go that route again.spanner wrote:Agree with you totally DVBUCK.In an office of about 110 walks where most people are on board there are still about half a dozen pig headed mugs who come in early, fly out early and continue to carve up the job.It has been explained to them over and over again that we are fighting to protect our jobs, but all they do is bury their heads in the sand and think short term. The minute they get any abuse they run crying to the managers so now there is a seething resentment and hatred of these people who are looked on as strike breakers. The only reason they don't cross the picket line is because they are scared too,not because they believe in the cause.
