Royal Mail has been forced to apologise after delivery staff stuffed Conservative leaflets inside Bath and North East Somerset Council’s official magazine.
The Connect magazine, which goes to around 74,000 homes across the council’s patch, has to be non-political, and the insertion of the leaflets – along with other marketing material – has angered opposition councillors as the countdown to next month’s local elections begins.
Royal Mail has insisted it is not official policy to lump such material together in this way and has sent a detailed apology to the council official in charge of the contract with the firm.
Meanwhile, B&NES has posted a statement on its website explaining the situation.
It says: “It has come to our attention that a number of copies of the spring edition of Connect Magazine were distributed to some households in Bath with leaflets from other organisations including the Conservative Party, inserted within the publication.
“This is clearly a matter of concern as people opening the magazine may assume that the leaflets inside would have some connection to the council.
“The council has a contract with Royal Mail for delivering Connect and as soon as it was discovered that leaflets from other organisations were being inserted into the magazine, Royal Mail were contacted.
“Royal Mail has now apologised and explained that the act of delivery staff placing door-to-door leaflets inside large items to save time is actively discouraged.
“They have reminded their staff that items must be delivered separately from now on and their management will be monitoring this to ensure there are no further problems. The council will remind Royal Mail of this commitment before any further distribution of Connect Magazine.”
A statement from Royal Mail said: “We are very sorry that the customer has had a problem with our Door to Door service. As soon as we were made aware of this issue, staff were reminded of our Door to Door guidelines.”
In an email to council official Jason Moon, the firm says that disciplinary action will be taken if postmen or women ignore the instructions to separate out such items.
It says: “The act of placing Door to Door leaflets inside larger items is known as nesting and I can assure you that Royal Mail actively discourages this practice. It is easy to see why delivery staff do this, as bundling the Door to Door items that they have each week together makes it much easier for them to deliver to the various addresses on their walks.
“We do however appreciate that this can lessen the impact of each mailing and can easily lead to issues, where it could be taken to imply some sort of link between the companies, which may cause embarrassment. As such, if we are made aware of this problem happening, we can ensure that the relevant delivery office managers are contacted and thereby ensure that their staff are spoken to and made fully aware that this must not be done again.”
The email says the firm is not prepared to pay any compensation to the council.

Re: RM apology after Tory leaflet included in council magazi
I can't really understand what all the fuss is about. I mean, it's all got to land on the floor hasn't it? Either it becomes un-nested or lumped together. Lets put it this way, normally when someone opens a sealed cellophane wrapping of a newspaper, say, they will almost always expect a sh*t-load of leaflets to fall all over the shop. Anyone who thinks this loosely nested sh*t has some connection to any one person's major sh*t is obviously talking a load of sh*t.
Personally, I always makes sure the backsides always lands facing upwards, so that when poor sods have to pick all this sh*t up it's immediately thrown in the garbage -- as sh*t.

I don't nest them but I can see why if you are delivering Council Newspapers putting a political one inside it can be a bit dodgy.
Most other D2Ds you can probably get away with nesting if you wanted to risk it but guaranteed if you deliver to anyone in any political party (local or national) and they find any political literature inside a council newspaper then they most probably will go crying to the press claiming political bias.
Why - because they score political points.

I used to be a diesel fitter, and I had my own ways of doing things. Seems to me that RM isn't being realistic or rewarding enough to want to pays a man, or woman just to deliver something. No, you've also got to make it known that a certain recipient's individual needs must also be seen to be being met. Well, fugg you RM, you fugging c***s. We're just being paid to deliver this sh*t. If you want anything more than that, then get off your fat ars*s and do it yourselves, you fat fugging c***s!DGP1 wrote:axeman wrote:You do what you consider the easiest way to deliver the crap i'd pay scant regard to any royal fail comand to seperate them. If you can't complete the work THEY want you to do then tell them and get some off you. I don't know why people make it so hard for themselves, it's not a race anymore, you do your hours in whatever way RM want and then go home (and bitch and moan on RMC
).
Personally, I do deliver d2ds separately, and have always done so, but there's always going to be another lad or lass who's going to do their job the way they knows best.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

The truth is they know only to well if they force the issue of prepping them seperate then half the crap would not be delivered so they just turn a blind eye and will continue to do so ....they want them delivered not sent back !
