However why do you think that it wont happen to your office :hmmmm When its either happened or happening in eveyone's on here ?

They can time ANY of the walks im on and i can do it so it takes the full time . YES im one of the ones that rush around ( dont run :left: ) as i dont see the problem in wanting to finish as early as possible . But as i said if im being timed i can make every walk im on up to the full time allowed .

I dont come on here bragging i can do it fast blah blah i say it cos its what i do and CAN do because theres nothing stopping me .

Finishing an hour later than i do now wont be a problem but it just wont happen in my DO ...... like p&l :left: and NO personal cars :left:
It's not a case of being timed and slow timing it for that one day mate, they will want your finish times written down EVERY day, and they WILL check up on those they think are lying.

Believe me i'm not a forum diehard, and my name hasn't got flyer in it for nothing  By all means make hay while the sun shines, just be aware that when it comes to your office (and it will) you're going to have to steady it down and work at a normal pace.

We only collapsed through the summer on Mon Tues as well, now it's Mon-Fri and Sat as well if you've made time.

To be perfectly honest if I flew round I could collapse 6 days and still make time every day - but where does it end? I'd end up with another bit of collapsing because the time is there to do it. Instead our P&L revision walks are now only 3.5hrs long because we haven't got the time to do anything longer.

I have a nice 20 min break at 9am now, take in some breakfast and have a laugh for a bit before going out on the walk. I don't like the later finishes but the actual job i'm finding suprisingly relaxed compared to what it was.

job and finish does exist and some of the responses on here highlite some of the things wrong with royal mail ,,,, i listen to the full timers in our office reminising on what it used to be like how a heavy day was 2/3bags and how they used to get out and back early and do another part round and still be home by 11.and how much they used to earn, i witness what goes on every day most get away with murder theres a reason that there is a high turn over of staff[ nearly all of those who leave are p/t] who get the s**t day in day out ,the bullying most people recieve at royal mail has been around a while, the things that are done are done out of habit its called institutionalised bullying ,weak management and poor union practices are mainly responsible, all rounds should be equal there should be no advantage in a resign and treatment and rights should be equal. not all full timers are bad or intimidating as im sure not all union reps are like the one at our office ,i got afew days off ,but when i come back online there will be some choice comments

That’s a very good point and one that’s often forgotten. Yes we did make LOADS of time and the job was less tiring but the basic money was piss poor. You needed to take on at least 2 double ups (half a walk on OT) to actually have a life and be able to pay your bills etc.

twobags wrote:there should be no advantage in a resign and treatment and rights should be equal

This is very SLOWLY starting to happen as each resign brings the rounds more equal. Its not there yet mind. My last delivery was a drive out to the sticks then all walking and it was a nice 3hrs when it signed for it. However because you had the van more and more got placed on the duty and it ended up a 4hr slog plus 30 mins driving each day.

This resign I decided to chose something that filled all my time and although its not been easy I now work all my hours and use the proper equipment. I did this so they cannot put anymore on me with flexing and absorption etc. Its still tough to see the few flyers we have left walking out the door up to 90 mins before me but I know for a fact its all being watched and they ARE going to cut more duties in the summer.

For me ive found it important to know (that as much as possible) they arent going to affect my working life again and again by adding more and more work and with it pressure to cut every day. It is harder to work like this but less stressfull when you can simply say no to any absortion etc without any come back.

Very good post. i was a FT er, but agree with what you say about the high turnover of recent starters ( vast majority PT )

The thing is, this is starting to have an affect on the "untouchables" the blokes who been doing the job for donkeys years and claim to only know one walk, so as to prevent being messed about. In my old office, these posties who felt immune to all the $hit going on are now feeling the tentacles of fear gripping them, as there are more and more vacancies unfilled, and the new starters are only lasting 5 mins before realising even Mr Tesco offers better prospects ( matter of fact, 2 former FT blokes left RM to go and work at a new Tesco store nearby )

krussel, the words in your sig are nagging in my brain, sure i have heard them before, but cant think where, song lyrics or from a book ?

You are making a common mistake in the part-time/full-time debate.
The reason that there is a high turnover in new staff is because....they are new....not because they are part-time.
New starts have always had it hard in this job....even way back when everybody thinks it was so easy...it didn't matter whether they were part-time or full time,if you had less than 5 years in....you got all the s**t to deal with.
I'm not saying it was right...just that it wasn't a contracted hours issue.
Let's be honest...the job is not what 99% of people think it is,it is a complete culture shock to most and that is the reason for the high turnover in staff...not their contracted hours which are about the only thing they are aware of from the day and minute they apply for the job.
People have wrongly tied the two issues together because RM don't take on full-time new starts anymore.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

You make a very good point ft. When I started I had no idea that you prepared for delivery as well as deliver and despite my age, I was 40 odd when I came to RM and got a pair of sh*t deliveries to start with, though quite fit and able then, they were AG duties of 35 hours, one of which was a rural with 836 DPs but I never considered quitting even though the pay was a great deal less than I was used to.

There's the rub I think when people start p/t I think many of them are under the impression that they will be made f/t in the fullness of time but after 2/3/4 years the penny drops and there isn't enough seniority to not end up with the sh*t end of the stick. With the recession though people will definitely think twice. I wonder what the new legislation on retirement will have on the chances of moving up the seniority ladder and on recruitment in general.

Yep tis true, great song :cool

Lyrics to Street Spirit (Fade Out) :

rows of houses all bearing down on me
i can feel their blue hands touching me
all these things in all positions
all these things will one day take control
and fade out again and fade out

this machine will will not communicate these thoughts
and the strain i am under
be a world child form a circle before we all go under
and fade out again and fade out again

cracked eggs dead birds
scream as they fight for life
i can feel death can see it's beady eyes
all these things into frution
all these things we'll one day swallow whole
and fade out again and fade out again.

i must have started just as it was getting worse for the exact reason i dont know why probably another profit making money saving scheme that rewarded those at the top. anyway point is they put up the resign list today and i couldnt believe where i was i know i got some s**t comin as do most at that end of the scale, but what i did notice is from around the time i joined most had gone upto a year before and all those who had come after hardly any have stayed ,and we have just had some new starters , the week i started i was one of 8 im the only one left,i knew it was bad when i was talking to someone from our office asking him how it was goin and the usual garb when he stopped me mid sentence to say he had quit 3 months earlier. the record for our office is around 2 hrs for a new starter but they cant varify that as no one seen him leave ,he said he was just going to the toilet, as for the percentage of the turn over of leavers being because they are new its not that simple ,ive been there about 5 and a 1/2 years and still feel outside of the loop our union rep and managers do nothing to bed you in help or encourage good working practices .instead your bullied and harrased at varing stages ,stiched up on a regular basis by both managers ,union rep and so called expierienced posties.im just wise enough now not to take the crap though as i recently discovered still prone for a stitch up. point im trying to make is in all that time ive been there i still feel isolated ,bad working practises caused by poor management that havent got basic people skills aided by a watery union rep[our office].they say that a high turn over of staff will kill your buisness and to train and kit out 1 person on average costs a company an average of £3500.00.let alone totally destroy your efficiency.these to me are old lessons that royal mail have never taken on. and dont look like doin, i gotta go see my brother off

To be honest mate 5 years is nothing in RM. My mate has got almost 10 years in and still isn't full time. I didn't get FT or my own walk for nearly 7 years, i've got 14 years in now and am still halfway down the seniority list at no.70!

I would hate it if there was no seniority though. You've got to realise that you get NOTHING else for working at RM for years other than a pension that's dying on it's arse. It's only fair that the longer time served people get first choice, they were new once as well and took all the shite the same as the rest of us have had to.

The last thing someone needs at 55-60 years old is to be slapped on the longest heaviest walk in the office. Walks are definitely getting more even and finish times closer together than they were, but there are always going to be lighter/flatter/more pleasant walks in any office.

Yes, thinking about it, you are right bud.

When i started, the first 6 months were hell and i nearly quit a few times, think it helped that i stand my corner if i think i'm being s**t on, and was always prepared to have a row if i thought it justified, the meek definately dont think inherit the earth at Royal Mail  Plus like a lot of people i only started at RM after a redundancy, and being on 50% of previous salary didnt fill me with enthusiasm, but if you've got to pay the bills and put food on table, you of course do it.

But i still think PT newbies have an extra layer of shite to deal with...

Thanks for the answers re the song lyric, have that song on some compilation cd, top top tune, period.

Ah...so that's why the company is in trouble and we ain't getting our colleague share allowance! (joking btw!)

Working hard and going home early is fine. Swinging the lead, ambling about, not pulling your weight, moaning that you can't take anymore on, sorting slowly and delivering even slower...and then STILL making half an hour on a busy day, an hour and a half on Tuesdays and almost two hours on a Saturday is basically taking the piss imo.

However much you refuse to believe it, there is a bigger picture to look at here.
