Postman leaves set of keys in Lochee pillar box

A postal catastrophe  was narrowly averted in Dundee after a forgetful postman left his keys dangling from the door of a Lochee postbox.

http://www.thecourier.co.uk/News/Dundee ... r-box.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Keys to dozens of postboxes in the east of Dundee were left in the door of the postbox on Thursday. Although most were only identified by number, some had tags identifying their location by name — including one for the postbox outside the Wellgate Centre.

Thousands of items of mail could have been plundered from postboxes across the city had the keys been stolen.

Fortunately, Dundee man Robert Fitchet grabbed the keys and contacted The Courier — but, he said, only after seeing off a youth who was about to take them, and being given short shrift by Royal Mail.

"I was coming down from the doctor's and I saw the boy walk away and leave the keys at the back of five o'clock," he said.

"I waited around a bit because I thought he would realise his mistake and come back for them, but he didn't appear.

"Then some young lad in a shellsuit saw them and was going to take them so I got out the car, told him to leave them alone and took them."

Mr Fitchet went to his father's house in nearby Tofthill and called Royal Mail but was given little assistance.

"I was put through to a call centre in England somewhere and they told me I would have to call the local sorting office," he said.

"But when I asked them if they had a number they weren't able to give me one."

Mr Fitchet said someone could easily have used the keys to steal mail — and gained access to personal information that would have made it possible to commit identity fraud on a massive scale.

He added, "People could have been putting anything in post boxes, from Mother's Day cards to census forms.

"It's ridiculous — people trust Royal Mail as much as they do the police."

Mr Fitchet handed the keys back to a postman sent to search for them in Lochee on Thursday night, nearly two hours after they had been left in the postbox.

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said, "Obviously, on this occasion there has been a human error and the postman has forgotten to take his keys.

"We sent someone out to look for them as soon as it was noticed.

"We are extremely grateful to the customer who found the keys and tried to contact us, and will be stressing the importance of security to staff in the sorting office."

All of our collection keys are kept separate on collection boards...so that a postal catastrophe of this magnitude never happens.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

if a postman has left the keys in a box its because hes just emptied it.
we dont visit empty boxes and fill them up. so a massive catastrophe is many hours of customer posts away.

Im a regular joe public walking past a postbox and i spot a a set of keys in the lock.
What are my choices?
1: Take to a police station. :Applause
2: Better still hand them to a postman :Applause
3: Leave them at a post office counter. :Applause
4: Drop them i a post box. :Applause

Dont forget the obvious choice?
5: .... contact the local newspaper ! :hmmmm
unless your not an attention seeking muck-raker
who would sell his grandma for a mere 5 minutes of fame. :no no

The guy that found the keys contacted Royal Mail got put through to a call centre who couldnt give him a local dundee number to return them : Applause.
He went to nearby lochee Police Station no Police available Applause
There was no postman available as he drove off leaving the keys in the post box . Applause for the incompetent dunderhead
The local Post Office was closed Applause

DROP THEM BACK IN A LOCKED BOX BACK IN SAME POSTBOX Applause Why to hell would the guy do that .

I was there and assure you that the media arrived on the scene after a tip off from a local shopkeeper and the guy was duped into the newspaper smear very cleverly by the reporter.

Yes i work for Royal Mail .Applause for me red face more like lol.

The keys were for route 22 these have keys that access many boxes and buildings inc job centre plus in Wellgate .Many more buildings i dare not mention for breach of security .

Royal Mail my bosses should applause the man who found them and sack the incompetent dunderhead that left them behind .

Nobody likes to disrespect there employer but Royal Mail Dundee Offices are full of non stop blunders and local newspapers full bad publicity . Its about time we got a grip and shipped out such poor negligent workers . You turn the lock empty the mail in a bag close the door and lock it . Its bloody kids stuff lols .Leaving keys in a box is like leaving a rat in charge of the cheese larder .

Get real mate Royal Mail balls up again .
The newspaper bad publicity upsets you and me and shames us to admit we are employed and part of the organisation lol lol lol but had the keys got in the wrong hands things could have been a lot lot worse my friend

I don't think there is anyone who has worked for Royal Mail for more than 5 years who hasn't at some point screwed up with a set of keys.
My line manager has "lost" two sets that i have handed to him.

As far as Dundee is concerned the word from Managers down here is that 99% of the mess up there has been created by heavy-handed,piss poor management and equally poor planning so....where should we start the cull Terry?
The OPG's :left:
That would be a management decision that would be about par for the course for Dundee.. :cuppa
