KNUTSFORD’S posties have been told to ditch their bikes in a move Royal Mail bosses have said will result in a ‘modernisation’ of the service.
Royal Mail has told its postmen they must deliver post by van instead of using a bicycle.
But so far many townsfolk don’t believe the change has been a successful one.
The Guardian has been contacted over the past week by residents saying their post is now arriving between 2pm and 3pm after the change was implemented.
One Knutsford resident, who did not wish to be named, told the Guardian that the decision to get rid of the bikes was puzzling.
“It’s a British institution having postmen using bicycles to deliver the post and it keeps them fit,” she said. It is also good for the environment.
“I think the postal system is pretty good generally but why make the change and and claim it’s quicker when clearly it’s not?”
Marie Gray, spokesman for Royal Mail, said the changes were part of a UK wide ‘modernisation’ programme.
“We have recently introduced new delivery practices into our Knutsford delivery office,” she said.
“These changes involve new ways of working and are part of a UK-wide modernisation programme aimed at placing the business on a more efficient and sustainable footing for the future.
“The changes to delivery practices in Knutsford were made over the past few weeks.
“These changes are being introduced on a phased basis and will see the introduction of new and modern equipment and the reorganisation of delivery routes.
“We apologise to customers who may have experienced some disruption to postal services however, all the mail in Knutsford is being delivered to all addresses on a daily basis.”

Optional extra comments for RM spokesmen:
We apologise but.........weather, CWU, Act of God, we have no idea what we're doing, at least I'll still get my bonus, what do you mean, I've been made redundant.
You've just got to love these spokesmen, they spout the same lines over and over and over, and no-one says to them, "You're talking crap!"
