Well if the question was applied to my D.O I can provide some mundane tasks such as trying to get mail without a complete accurate address to the right house or writing out cards for underpaid mail or helping in the callers/enquiry office, perhaps keeping it open for longer.

As a long term solution mangement would reduce the number of duties or move to prep and deliver only full size urban rounds by whipping off the IPS.

I hope you haven't left any clues to your identity on the forum. You've just admitted fraudulently claiming overtime :silenced
Thats how overtime is at my office and how its always been past 13 years!, the manager books our o.t (i presume) and tells us how many hours we will get for it so we're not doing anything wrong.
By overtime i mean doing part or all of another round (not claiming o.t for doing our own rounds).
Just say NO ....to the new agreement.

To recitfy that without loss of duties/staff means instigating some buy down of hours thus making the 75FT/25PT split harder to achive.

Many a OPG at my D.O will claim that they ar rushing around and making time but if they stopped they wouldnt make any time, yet none of them will make any attempt to prove their words. Even taking into account the early start and no MR, time is still there so is it genuine spare capacity or not doing the job properly or even both? :hmmmm
There are 45 walks in our postcode area, and we have 5-6 people on IPS with the rest doing other prep work etc. It takes around 90 mins a day, plus extra prepping of PT walks after that so they're completely finished.

The days of us standing shoulder to shoulder on the IPS frames went years ago.

I start at 6.30 and my first letter goes in my own frame around 8-8.15, first letter on the walk around 10-10.30.

It sounds to me from reading this forum that a lot of DO's are well overstaffed, and I can see a lot of VR's in the next few years. Getting out on delivery at 8am is far too early and just shows the savings that can be made.

What you are missing Calpsy is that he doesn't have to finish an hour and a half early in the first place.
If someone starts on time, takes their breaks and does the job by the book it is very unlikely that anyone,no matter how fast they think they are can finish an hour and a half early on an average day unless their office is stuck in 1997.

I appreciate that there are some offices in this situation but my advice would be,use some common sense and try to protect as many jobs as you can because things are about to change.

YES i know WHY they finish early . Its many many things . THATS NOT WHAT IM ASKING ! ! !

Its not the person finishing early thats at fault . My question is ( which has NEVER been answered ) WHAT DOES HE DO WHEN HES FINISHED IF THE OFFICE IS EMPTY ? ? ?
Again you are missing the point and to be fair I already answered your question in a roundabout way.

If you finish early whether its 5 mins - 20 minutes or 3 hours it matters not a jot to me - Its up to managers to find you the work if they dont fair enough go home if they let you.

But at some point, and this is the bit you are blind to or keep missing - Management will add extra and if you are constantly finishing early you are more vulnerable than those who work properly (I dont include arse dragger's either as they also have an affect on colleagues) . So as said before.

Chase the hours and minutes if you want - but be aware that management will come for it at some point.
Chase the hours if you want - but watch out for the Managers who may try to harvest it.
I hope you now understand that this thread is discussing the affect on others and not on the individual concerned which appears your main concern.

Now can we get back on the point of discussing what posties do that make this job harder than it should be for others, rather than the benefits real or imagined to the individual.

It isn't anything to do with walking faster.
After P&M and again with BT2010 we signed up to an agreement to work the hours that we are paid and vice versa so....no matter how fast you "think" you are or whether you "pretend" you are a better postie than the guy next to you if you are paid for 8hrs...you are due to work for 8hrs.It's the whole "beat the clock" attitude that has left the job screwed. :cuppa
OK this 8hr guy has finished 1 and a half hours early . The office is empty . No-one there . The doors open though but everythings done .

Tell me ........ what does he do to work his 8 hours ????

Ive asked it before MANY MANY times but not ONCE has anyone replied cos there IS no reply .
Revision, revision, revision..........................simple................then you won't be finishing 90 minutes early.

It has 460 delivery points. There is not a single wall separating a house on the whole walk (they're not terraced, but a runner could hop over the grass and probably knock half an hour off). Try as I might, starting at my normal time, etc., I have not found a way to make it last more than three hours. It doesn't get lots of mail. It doesn't get lots of packets. The 'other walk' I have been on gets loads of mail, loads of packets, has more houses separated by solid objects, and on top of that has another hundred houses. It cannot be done in less than three hours on the lightest of light days.

Putting whatever slant on it one might, it's a baby walk.

460 Delivery points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok that's half a walk who does the other half? :hmmmm
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

Up until around 3 months ago it was all different, it was finish on the street in our office and I very very rarely finished after 12 - on Tuesdays I would be home for 11.30 at the latest. Now I have a van, return to office and barely make any time at all.

I never thought i'd say it but my attitude to the job has completely changed, I don't really give a sh*te now and just do a steady days work. I could still finish early if I wanted but now it's return to office you'd have to be retarded to do that.

FWIW finishing early, runners, no breaks etc hasn't given us huge deliveries, our walks under P&L are 3.5hrs which tbh is nice and steady, but we get out so late that we work to time most days.

My god flyer after all this time your seeing the job from the other side and now understand what we have been banging on about for the last 2 years.

Good on you for coming on and sharing your experience :Applause :Applause :Applause

Ok i get your point here as managers at my office are out the door before 1pm but they do see a few (its only a few now) coming back before 12 and they are already planning to increase those deliveries in the next round of buget cuts.

It does not always have to be the manager watching you come back as locker staff WILL let them know what time people are getting back, believe me  .
Also most DO have a good CCTV system which can easly be used to check people's return times.
Since our table top revision quite a few of the flyers now know if they return early they will be given extra roads on the next changes so they lose themselves for an hour in a local cafe (or tesco's food bar) and come back nearer 1pm.

Have a 2nd look at Flyers post above this one as he once believed nothing would ever change and sadly Calpsy it already has for some.

Oh and although it drives me mad to say  It looks like you may have been right about the use of cars :d'oh! :cry

Everyone thinks it's not going to happen, but it is, and to every office at some point. Our revision hasn't actually come in yet so I can finish on the street if I want and not use a van - but what's the point for a few more weeks/months.

I always knew it was coming, but as I get paid for 8hrs then working 8hrs doesn't bother me. I do know what Calpsy means when he says what else can they do as the job is finished - but how do managers not know what their finish times are? Do they not fill in the sheets? If not they soon will do because the DSM's will want to see what time people are finishing. And lying won't work because managers WILL check up on people, I guarantee it.

That's the point when I stared working more steadily, because the time we were making every day wasn't a realistic picture of the actual workload - we just hammered it and went home. Once they (not the linos, the people above) start looking at your times, you have to look at what you're doing and think about what impression you're giving them.

Sadly there are still people in my office using their own cars when there are FREE vans sat there doing nothing - they don't have to take anything extra, the vans are there for all to use. There are even people who DON'T finish early taking their own cars instead of a van - why?

ONAFLYER if it comes you HAVE to work your full amount of hours then not a problem .

They can time ANY of the walks im on and i can do it so it takes the full time . YES im one of the ones that rush around ( dont run :left: ) as i dont see the problem in wanting to finish as early as possible . But as i said if im being timed i can make every walk im on up to the full time allowed .

I dont come on here bragging i can do it fast blah blah i say it cos its what i do and CAN do because theres nothing stopping me .

Finishing an hour later than i do now wont be a problem but it just wont happen in my DO ...... like p&l :left: and NO personal cars :left:
