Totally agree, why do so many people assume that if people finish quicker they're cutting corners and if they finish later they're taking the piss!! I'm sure if you got 100 posties to just walk five miles there would be a huge variation in the times taken!

Re: Job and finish.....
the walks are not timed right, done just about every walking duty in our office and there is some huge differences in times.
P&L wont work 100% because of our speeds,
monday, worked on own and used timed bags because drops scrapped, done at 12:15,
tuesday, very light day and worked as a pair, done at 1:30 on what i'd say were 2 easier walks.
simple matter is i walk faster than certain others and i wait at the van for next loop,
didn't take full walk today for only 2nd time ever, i would have pissed it if i worked on my own.

After P&M and again with BT2010 we signed up to an agreement to work the hours that we are paid and vice versa so....no matter how fast you "think"you are or whether you "pretend"
you are a better postie than the guy next to you if you are paid for 8hrs...you are due to work for 8hrs.
It's the whole "beat the clock" attitude that has left the job screwed.
I think you will find that incompetence at the top level over the last 30 years or so have screwed the job.
Posties that are finishing before their time since SDD came in are not to blame for the pension black hole, lack of investment, the Consignia debacle etc etc .......
My back is f****d......

No your right but sorry I don't see your point, as no one blamed posties for them.Darren wrote:Posties that are finishing before their time since SDD came in are not to blame for the pension black hole, lack of investment, the Consignia debacle etc etc .......
I mean posties chase hours to make minutes and that's their choice (IMHO a wrong one). However things don't happen in isolation and when a managers says "Well x does it" is a prime example of how this job is f****d up by posties.
Work hard - yes - but don't work stupid.
Chase the hours if you want - but watch out for the Managers who may try to harvest it.
Ignore H&S rules if you want - just watch that back later on in life.
Don't take your breaks - but watch your energy levels fall and diet suffer.
Use unofficial short cuts if you want - but watch the manager blame you when something goes wrong.
Use your car on deliveries if you want - but watch out for the police if your not iron clad covered.
Use your car on deliveries if you want - but remember with the benefits comes the costs (wear and tear, depreciation, fuel) and equal savings for RM.
As I keep saying its all personal choices but all choices have an impact and not just on you and yours. All of the above are used on a daily basis somewhere in RM by a manager when they say "Well x can do it, why cant you". Well some of the reasons are above.

Agreed, however the point i was making is that it will be past mistakes that finish off RM, long before posties chasing a few hours do.

Calpsy..the concept of protecting what you have completely passes you by.calpsy wrote: OK this 8hr guy has finished 1 and a half hours early . The office is empty . No-one there . The doors open though but everythings done .
I don't care if "this guy" ends up with another hour and a half of work.
I do care about the guy whose job disappears because of it though.
I wasn't aware of that Darren...thanks for the heads upDarren wrote: I think you will find that incompetence at the top level over the last 30 years or so have screwed the job.

Missorts at 840
0630 last mail arrival at my D.O and its out on del as soon as your ready to go and been to the locker even if other people are still prepping.

You are approaching this from completely the wrong angle.calpsy wrote:

If the walk is 3hr 30, how can you complete 90 minutes early. It clearly isn't a 3hr 30 walk.
Or you are leaving the DO early. How?
You clearly have too many people on IPS - the staffing isn't aligned to the workload.
Or you are not helping the others in your office who need help.
If everyone is finishing that early then the staffing is not aligned to the workload and when it is ..........then you will understand the importance of doing the job properly.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Re: Job and finish.....
I've been on a different walk this week to my usual one. It's about two-hundred metres down the road (the spine of it is the same main road as my usual walk). It has 460 delivery points. There is not a single wall separating a house on the whole walk (they're not terraced, but a runner could hop over the grass and probably knock half an hour off). Try as I might, starting at my normal time, etc., I have not found a way to make it last more than three hours. It doesn't get lots of mail. It doesn't get lots of packets. The 'other walk' I have been on gets loads of mail, loads of packets, has more houses separated by solid objects, and on top of that has another hundred houses. It cannot be done in less than three hours on the lightest of light days.
Putting whatever slant on it one might, it's a baby walk.

Re: Job and finish.....
Too many on the IPS sounds like my D.O
To recitfy that without loss of duties/staff means instigating some buy down of hours thus making the 75FT/25PT split harder to achive.
Many a OPG at my D.O will claim that they ar rushing around and making time but if they stopped they wouldnt make any time, yet none of them will make any attempt to prove their words. Even taking into account the early start and no MR, time is still there so is it genuine spare capacity or not doing the job properly or even both?

Trueblue instead of trying to be smart why dont you EXPLAIN what you know so well .? ? ?
YES i know WHY they finish early . Its many many things . THATS NOT WHAT IM ASKING ! ! !
Its not the person finishing early thats at fault . My question is ( which has NEVER been answered ) WHAT DOES HE DO WHEN HES FINISHED IF THE OFFICE IS EMPTY ? ? ?
