Training walks/rounds?

Post by L8Hatter »

Just wondering if anyone else has heard this expression used before? Got told last week that me and another longer-term part-timer would be taken off our walks from Wednesday to Saturday as they had been designated 'training walks'. We're still doing them on Monday and Tuesday.

These are for newbies, a couple of weeks in (i.e. they've already had their mentoring). But my round gets the most mail and has the most call points in the section. The other one is also a shocker. If they don't get any help (which they won't), they'll still be in the office at 1030 and everyone's bag drops go to buggery.

It doesn't make any sense and no-one understands it, or has heard of a training round before?

The lino says it isn't his decision, which I'm prepared to believe, as he's still fairly new and doesn't know the rounds at all yet.

5.2 Fixed Walk
For a minimum of the next 6 weeks wherever possible New Entrants will be provided
with a fixed duty in order that they can embed their new learning through a fixed
walk.

In order to build their confidence it would probably help if the walk was achievable.
Sticking them on the office shocker ain't gonna help

Simular issue has just come up on my division actually. Part timers who have been happily been doing their walks for over 6 months moved to spares or reserves so their walks can be training walks! The walks in question are easily some of the hardest on the division so dont know what retard came up with that idea. :d'oh!

Do you guys have training walks in your Delivery offices or is it just a random rule they have decided to enforce here just to annoy people? I know i didnt even spend 2 days in a row on a walk for my first 6 months at royal mail...

are you kidding...?
if i remember rightly i only had 8 days "training" split over 2 walks each with a different trainer... after that i had 2 days doing 2 seperate walks in tandam with a guy that started 2 days before me... then was thrown in at the deep end on a solo walk...

7 weeks my ar*e

although it was normally the same walk and same senior postie that new starts got trained on during their first week or so... but was never formally classed as a training walk/round from anything i heard or read .. just was the prefered walk and its duty holder by the DOM...

Following on from the first post, it was even more of a disaster than expected.

1000 on Wednesday, everyone's ready to go, but predictably, the new starter is still a long way from ready. Give him a hand and he starts walking at 1130. Turns out he was still walking around at 5.30, got fed up and brought a bag back.

Thursday, he comes in to a bollocking, sackable offence etc. This time, he's coming out with me. Why not yesterday :hmmmm His confidence was knocked from his experiences the day before, and he's incredibly slow to start with, but is getting close to something like a decent speed at the end.

Friday 9.15, he hasn't shown, so I'm back on the round. Check my phone when I start, and he has jacked it in. My day off yesterday :nana

What a shambles. The round he was trained on is the easiest in the office. No firms, all loops back to a post office and can be done in 2 hours on a good day. Then they stick him on the heaviest round in terms of mail and call points. He's had a horrible time, and it's cost RM loads in OT. The management here are generally alright, but there's s sort of collective idiocy which come into effect when blatantly bad decisions need changing.

Last december I asked about a workcoach job. I was told by our DOM that each division would be having a workcoach and applications would be taken in the new year. In January my line manager told me to write my application which I duly did.4 weeks ago I was asked to train a new starter up.I trained him up for a week and since then he has continued on my round as part of his training, whilst I have been a floater.
This morning I asked the DOM about my application for the workcoach job as I havent been told if I had got the job,and if I have when do I start getting paid for it.I was told that in the current climate no decisions have been made about employing workcoachs, what with the mess with colleague shares etc.
So basically I have trained the guy, been messed about for 3 weeks and for what? Nothing by the looks of it.
I will now refuse to train anybody unless I get paid for it,im not putting myself out for nothing. Its tough on the newbies because they will just get stuck on a round and told to get on with it.

Even if you are not the workplace coach you are entitled to the Daily Training Allowance if you train somebody.
Ask your rep to sort it out.

National Agreement
Induction Training with Coaching Support.

Where there is more than one New Entrant commencing in the same week
Coaches will be required to provide a suitably experienced individual that the
New Entrant can shadow. These individuals will receive the daily non-school
training allowance for each day they are assisting with the Delivery Coaching.

In all fairness to the lino, I think it was something a bit odder than that. He was still fairly new at the time, so the previous lino was still doing the planning for the walks. I don't think he was that happy at being moved. He knew all the rounds and I don't think he'd have made these training rounds if he was still in charge. Might be wrong.

Another new starter quit after 5 weeks at the weekend. Pissed off with the amount of D2Ds (i.e. all of them), deads and redirections she was coming into on Wednesday. That's two out of the six who've started in the last couple of months. The ones who are left all use their own cars so it's a lot less agg for the manager and drivers.

Those on Wednesday to Saturday contracts really do get the short straw. Fair play to the ones who are sticking it out

Did you claim or cut off on the heavier days on these big rounds?
Could it be that the lino's know that newbies are far more likely not to complain for fear of losing their jobs put them on these 'training rounds', then haven't got the
hassle of people claiming/cutting off?

One of the walks converted to a training walk in my DO was covered by a lad also on a temp casual contract so he didnt really claim that much OT at all. Its a valid point though i wouldnt put such blatant scheming past our dodgy managers!
