Weve had similar situation with Big Dave 13 year unblemished record, never had a day off sick and was well liked and respected by previous managers staff and customers, lost his job on the word of two bosses who lied to cover their own mistakes up, and now weve got managers that have blatently victimised two female colleagues and still try to push the issue even though theres nothing to answer to, it seems RM will do anything to get rid of staff and yet weve had managers here that have done far worse and still kept their jobs. STAY STRONG LUTON, AND I HOPE HE WINS HIS APPEAL...UNITY IS STRENGTH.

We have had several cases in the last couple of years where the van/mail or both have been stolen. One person had left the keys in the van with the engine running and a number of SDs in it - it was stolen and although he had only been with RM for a short time he received a serious warning - about 18 months later a young postman with about 12 years service left the keys in the van and was sacked.

The difference was every driver signed a statement to say they were aware of the procedure for vehicles on delivery several times prior to the last incident when the lad was sacked. He did appeal and lost. I don't know if there was a tribunal but I doubt he would have won.

There is salutary lesson to be learned - if you drive for RM you are at greater risk than if you don't and unless you have an outstanding allowance you don't get a penny more!

As i have said before the Royal Mail conduct code states deliberate disreguard of security, if he did not do it on purpose which im sure he didnt. Just admit your mistake, own up to it, you screwed up, but you cant get sacked for a mistake
In the future lock your van at every call my buddy did on his rural & the round took him a extra hour and a half
Dont forget to place all your mail in the back of the van, you must not leave it in the front visable to the public

I've been doing that for a while now and it does take extra time which is what I tell my DUM if he questions me. Anyway it's the strike breakers who are the worst offenders so whenever they get caught.

Many have been sacked for just making a mistake all they need is reasonable doubt and they can sack you.

My sympathies to Mr Peters, incidentally there were two blokes in my office made the same mistake seperately two or three years ago but luckily both vans were found undamaged and the mail still in them, presumably somebody wanted free transport home, after a driving ban they were OK. Even if you're close by at least switch off and take the keys with you, now most vans I drive have central locking, if there are any problems with locks not working refuse to use it and take it off the road immediately! I only say all this as sadly we have to cover our backs against :lfo :cfo and all their parasites with their noses up their a***s.

Hi manwithnovan no they were banned for only a month or six weeks as both vehicles turned up undamaged these two incidents happened about three or four years ago, now when all of us seem to have a sword hanging over us it is any excuse for a screw to get rid of a full time worker for a 25 hour contract and a pat on the head and a biscuit from :lfo :cfo. In the tradition of double standards in Royal Fail on saturdays there is no-one on duty in the M/T in my office so all the van keys, box keys etc get thrown into letter trays in a skip and left until Monday morn. A vehicle could go missing saturday, the hypocritical screws wouldn't know until monday, and yes I have warned them in the past. . . .
