Re: The truth behind the London Mail Centre plan
Two out of seven London Mail are to shut, a closure rate of 29 %dingo wrote:it is fair for people to question why when other mail centres are closing around the country that London is different.
Royal Mail`s decision to annonce it at the same time as the colleague share announcement was a clear attempt to ensure that members around the country would possibly not support the arguement in London.
However lets be under no illusions here , how Royal Mail are treating staff in London mail centres is totally different to other mail centre closures.
When a Mail centre closes normally anywhere than staff have a choice they either can move with the work to the mail centre where your work is going or if jobs are reducing take VR.
In London`s case there are not enough jobs available as I will explain below and that will mean complusory redunacies in particular for full time processing staff.
South London`s work is going to three mail centres , the Mount , Croydon and Jubillee. However the New Mount office is reducing from 944 full time staff to 410 meaning a reduction in the only mail centre staying open in London of 534 jobs. No one from South London can move to the Mount with any work. There are 543 full time staff in South London and there are only 222 jobs available in Croydon and Jubillee meaning a surplus of 321 staff without a job 69% of the workforce.
In East London`s case it is even worse there are 351 full time processing jobs but only 69 jobs in Romford meaning 282 staff are left without a job that is 80% of the workforce.
Royal Mail`s decision to push ahead will lead to complusory redunancies, we believe there is a risk of part timers also being made complulsory redundant. Why are Royal Mail doing this now because the prize they get for selling Rathbone Place , part of the mount and South London is worth treble what they are getting for closing 6 mail centres in the North East. Now tell me what do the union do ?
Do we say to those members well sorry we are not supporting you ? Because make no mistake once they start making people complusory redundant it wont stop there it will become the normal. Now I dont care where the area is they do it in but I would fight to stop it as that is what a union shoud do
You choose how you react but dont believe for one moment that it cant happen to you !
Getting people to fight is never easy but when you can say to someone if you dont fight then you face not having a job then most will fight.
Nationally about 32 out of 64 Mail centres are to shut, a closure rate of 50%
So, even if London looks to be better off than elsewhere, we must realise that all of us, from urban cockneys to rural peasants, are under threat, redundancy is a real possibility, and the worst of it will be if they're on compulsory terms with little paid out rather that the quite lucrative voluntary terms that many have been happy with in the past.

That spat between dvbuk and rockytony in my opnion is the unions fault.
Whn something goes wrong in a mail centre or a DO then as one we should all stand up, and when it all became sorting out local issues it all went tits up!

Lounge Lizard dont believe the spin. Royal Mail undertake mail centre reviews in each of their regions. In the London Royal Mail region there are only 3 mail centrs and they are closing 2 and the one which is being kept open is reducing full time staffing by 55 %.
Royal Mail have chosen to announce to the media and other postal members that they are closing to close 2 of out seven to con people. The other mail centres Romford , Jubilee , Greenford and Croydon were never under any review as they were not in the London Region , they come under either the Eastern , South East and Thames Valley region.

Just had a quick look cant find where it says we agreed a no strike deal for 3 years. It might of been on a brief at my mail centre but i have read it somewhere will have another look later.
By the way i didnt quite realise how badly the deliveries were shafted until i flicked over the agreement just now.

There was no actual agreement not to strike as such..what people are talking about is this section...drevil1969uk wrote:Just had a quick look cant find where it says we agreed a no strike deal for 3 years. And these....The need to ensure that national agreements are consistently deployed at a local level with continuity of service in a way that means industrial action and managerial executive action become unnecessary.
Nothing specific but definitely making industrial action difficult within the confines of the agreement. The agreement will be consistently deployed at local level with continuity of service in a way that means managerial executive action and industrial action become unnecessary.
Both parties are fully committed to all elements of this national agreement and neither will sanction any local negotiations which seek to change the principles or spirit of this agreement and/or make their deployment less effective and/or delay implementation.
The Industrial Relations Framework will still apply but the focus will be on joint problem solving and working together to develop practical solutions at local level. The formal disagreement procedure will only be used as a very last resort.
Issues should be resolved at the lowest possible level. If the Industrial Relations Framework procedure is utilised issues will be finally resolved at Regional/Divisional level.
but are we still within the confines of the BT2010 agreement....?
Going by the behaviour of Royal Mail....NO!

That's not the other question...it's the only question.
It doesn't take courage to ballot the affected units...that's a no brainer and once these guys are out then i would expect the majority of London to follow although even that will take a lot of work.
After that............who knows?
It cannot be denied that there is a perception amongst the membership in general that London has had preferential treatment over the years and i'm afraid that it matters not a tiny bit how true that perception is because it's the perception itself that does the damage not what's behind it.
It has been allowed to grow and to a certain extent been fed by the very people who it will come back to bite on the arse...HQ.
Balloting outside of the M25 will take a pair the likes of POSTMAN can only dream of.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Re: The truth behind the London Mail Centre plan
It keeps going back to my point that we should support everyone at all times and none of this local issues nonsense. If north east staff or north west or scotland or london have trouble we should support the fight. The fact it all became local threw everything in the air and always handed the iniative in battles to management. It also created a divide that shouldnt be there. When i have asked union about something before keep getting reminded that IM the union there just a rep. In that case wherever there is an issue we should all of been together. Too late now

Yeah but the problem is the perception is being perpetrated by members of this site who should know better, I've no problem with P#icks like Crozier or Higson who have an agenda, but to read post after post by people who claim London posties have it easy and are lazy is a bloody disgrace, I've been a walking postie for over 25 years and what people are posting is wrong, RM must be laughing their heads off, and now when it seems London Postie's are going to get worse treatment then anywere else in the country people are jumping with joy
Bravery isn’t not being afraid. Bravery is being afraid but doing it anyway
