The husband of postmistress Diana Garbutt has been arrested in connection with her murder and a suspected robbery at their shop in North Yorkshire.
Robin Garbutt, who is 44, is being questioned by detectives from North Yorkshire police.
On March 23 Mr Garbutt told detectives he had found his 40-year-old wife dead in the upstairs living quarters of Melsonby Post Office following an armed raid.
At a news conference the following day, detectives confirmed she had died from serious head injuries but did not reveal what weapon was used or the time of death.
Detective Superintendant Lewis Raw, of North Yorkshire Police, said Mr Garbutt told them he was confronted by a masked robber armed with a handgun.
"He was carrying a firearm at his side. The man threatened Mr Garbutt, saying 'We've got your wife'.
"The male then made off with a significant amount of money from the safe which he had placed in a black holdall."
A week later, as crime officers continued to search for clues at the post office, Mr Garbutt issued a brief statement through the police, appealing to be left alone to grieve.
"The past week has been extremely difficult and traumatic for me, Di was my life and I am lost without her," he said.
"I would like to express my gratitude for the support of my family, friends and the police. I now ask that the media respect my privacy."
Following Mr Garbutt's arrest, North Yorkshire Police delivered a letter from Det Supt Raw to homes in Melsonby shortly after 9am today.
Although not naming Mr Garbutt, the letter explained that a man had been arrested and that people should not speculate.
"The tragic death of Diana Garbutt three weeks ago has had a significant impact on people living in Melsonby and Richmondshire as a whole," he wrote.
"As we strive to bring Diana's killer to justice, it is vital that people resist from any form of speculation and rumour while the murder investigation continues."
Mr Garbutt reported another armed robbery at the post office a year and a week before his wife was killed.
Detectives say they recovered an imitation firearm following an extensive investigation into that raid, but that no arrests were made.
