Royal Mail Axes 3500 Jobs

Royal Mail is to axe up to 3500 jobs under an accelerated restructuring programme designed to alleviate its increasingly parlous financial position, I have learned.

I'm told that the company will announce this evening that 1700 of its head office managers are leaving (many of whom have already gone) as part of the process. Royal Mail will say that a further consultation period is beginning on the removal of as many 1000 operational management in mail centres and delivery offices across the country.

The company is also expected to make about 750 roles in its London mail centres redundant, which it hopes to achieve through voluntary redundancy. Almost £70m is being invested in upgrading its London mail sorting facilities as part of Royal Mail's modernisation programme, I'm told.

The 3500 job cuts underline the dteriorating financial position of Royal Mail, resulting, as I revealed earlier today, in employees being informed tomorrow that the value of their equity under an employee share scheme is now worthless.

Of Royal Mail's seven mail centres in London, it is likely that only five will be needed. I'm told that the company expects the rationalisation to involve the phased closure of the east London centre in Bromley-by-Bow and the south London centre in Nine Elms.

The company, which has been engaged in a detailed consultation process with the Communication Workers' Union, declined to comment.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Deputy Managers x 15 CV Delivery Sector Area....................
.............................For the periods you cover as a Deputy Manager, your pay will be supplemented with substitution payments. If you are currently a part time employee you will not be offered a full time OPG role, however when covering a full time managerial role you will be paid full time on overtime.

Pay an OPG to do the managers job!!!!

It's been with us for years...all they are doing is finally aligning the manager to OPG ratio.
You knew it wouldn't last forever..how low did you expect the ratio to go?...1 manager to every 10 OPG's.
You've had it too good for too long is all.

I disagree, It hasn't been with us for years. They haven't had compulsorys before but the precedent has now been set so I would expect many to go. ".....We are committed to doing everything we can, in line with our agreement with the union, to make these changes on a voluntary basis...." says Mr Higson. Very similar words were used by Moya when they did the support functions and look what happened to them.

from the Press Association:

Royal Mail is planning to axe 1,700 jobs, including 1,000 managers, and close two mail centres in London under plans which have been announced.

The company also said that a further 1,700 jobs had been cut since the start of the year in areas including finance, IT, human resources and support services.

The number of employees has been reduced by around 65,000 since 2002.

Royal Mail's south London mail centre in Nine Elms Lane will close in 2012, and the east London mail centre in Bromley-by-Bow will close in 2012. West End delivery operations, currently based in Rathbone Place, will transfer to Mount Pleasant during 2013.

Royal Mail said "significant reductions" in the number of mail centres was under way and around half of the 64 centres in 2010 could eventually close by 2016 or sooner.

"With the number of postal items posted in London expected to more than halve between 2006 and 2014, it is imperative that Royal Mail continues the modernisation programme," said the company in a statement.

The Greater London rationalisation programme is expected to achieve annual savings of £30 million, while £32 million will be invested in the Mount Pleasant site near King's Cross.

Speaking on Monday Mark Higson, Royal Mail's managing director of operations and modernisation, said: "Royal Mail's modernisation programme, which is vital to ensuring a successful future for the letters and parcels business, depends on having the right number of people in our business, as well as deploying the right technology and equipment.

"We are conscious of the impact today's announcement will have on our staff in London. It is hard to reduce job numbers at any time. We are committed to doing everything we can, in line with our agreement with the union, to make these changes on a voluntary basis. We will be providing specialist outplacement advice to help our people affected by this announcement to look for new opportunities outside Royal Mail."

Had a message off a colleague, who had just seen the news on Sky,he was saying the "share scheme" is worth absolutly nothing all and we probably wont recieve a penny,If so weve been well shafted again,Theyve managed to get us all doing D2D items for virtually nothing, some great union we have eh,the majority of us are in a far worse off situation financially then we were before the strikes.

IMO the CWU need firing, period,a new Union needs to step in,The guys at the top in the CWU are corrupt as hell, werent we all given certifacates that we could cash in after so many years?,Would they be breaking the law in not paying us what they promised?

All you idiots still paying your £4 odd a week to the CWU,how long you gonna carry on lining these mugs pockets?,You may as well flush your money down the toilet.
