A man was injured when he fell between two large containers on board one of the last working Royal Mail ships.

Coastguard crews and a helicopter were called to RMS St Helena, in Portland Harbour, Dorset, during the afternoon.

The man was airlifted from the ship, which travels to and from St Helena in the south Atlantic, one of the world's most remote islands.

A Portland Coastguard spokeswoman said the man, aged in his 20s, was thought to be a member of the ship's crew.

He was flown to Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester.

The RMS St Helena also takes passengers, as well as cargo, and is the only form of transport to and from the island.
