SOCIALIST WORKER

Postal workers in Luton will strike tomorrow (Wednesday) for 24 hours from 5am after a delivery postal worker was sacked. The worker had a nine year unblemished record when, under time pressure, he momentarily left the keys in his van while performing a collection and the vehicle was stolen.

He was charged with misconduct, dismissed, and lost an appeal.

A CWU union rep told Socialist Worker, â€œThe members felt this was a clear injustice because in some similar cases the worker has not been sacked,. It seems that Royal Mail has changed its policy, but we are not prepared to accept the decision in this case.

â€œThis is an official strike after the members voted overwhelmingly for action in a ballot.â€

This is just typical of them D****, what i think they are doing is any reason at all to sack a full-time person no matter how good they are at there job or how good a record dont matter to them.. in my office a man was sacked as he was already on a stage 3 but what put him over the edge as he was hospitalized , he got the sack, and as far as i am aware he lost his appeal... whole thing is a joke... wish u all the best and dont give in..

It looks as though everyone now has to watch their backs. If you do one thing wrong which even hints at being sackable they are doing it. Basically they are trying to cut down on the number of posties the cheapest way possible. If they do it to me, I'm going to take it all the way to the EU/Human Rights courts, even if I have no way of winning at least it'll give them grief.

LUTON TODAY

Royal Mail workers at Luton's main sorting office began a 24 hour strike today in support of a sacked colleague.

More than 190 members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) at the Dunstable Road office set up an official picket line outside the building, in a stand for a workmate they believe was the subject of unfair dismissal.

The postman was suspended in January after the van he was using on his round one Saturday morning was stolen from the Stopsley area, after he left the keys inside.

He immediately admitted his mistake but lost his job because of the error.

An appeals procedure has taken place and it is believed an employment tribunal will follow.

Workers hope that the strike, from 5am today until 5am tomorrow, will lead to the postman being reinstated.

Members of the CWU decided on industrial action after a ballot showed workmates were 2 to 1 in favour of a walkout.

But the strike will not affect the Sarum Road sorting office at Leagrave.

Royal Mail said it was "disappointed" that staff had decided to strike, and said it would try to keep disruption to a minimum.

My cupid stunt sorry DOM went to Luton today, a young postie put on a suit and took charge of our office. We had a pretty average day. I guess a lot of offices in our area did the same. Why dont royal mail get rid of the managers that went to Luton and save themselves a few bob............. We can manage without them...........

1 of our managers went as well.After reading that story NEVER ADMIT TO ANYTHING IF YOU f**k UP ,speak to your rep first if you can but where possible DONT ADMIT TO ANYTHING,a genuine mistake could cost you your job with these heartless bastards

It is like in our place where once again they are using the Dignity and Respect at Work angle to try to sack people. This is just a big stick to attack the workforce with once again...

Keep your chin up Luton
Have a look at the Royal Mail Conduct code it stats Deliberate disreguard of security warrents dissmissal. If it was a mistake it was not deliberate. Could you tell me when this happened (date) & how long after it happened was he dismissed
I may be able to help on this as i have experience

Employment tribunal to hear case
Sacked Luton postman John Peters, who was dismissed by Royal Mail after his postal van was stolen, has been inundated with messages of support from people in the town.

Wellwishers have stopped him in the street and he has received notes of praise from those he used to deliver mail to - as well as a letter from Luton North MP Kelvin Hopkins.

Mr Peters was fired by Royal Mail after his van was stolen in the Stopsley area when he left the keys inside the vehicle.

He immediately admitted his mistake, but lost his job because of the error earlier this year.

And now, in a letter of support, Kelvin Hopkins said: "While it is clear that John Peters made a mistake, dismissing him from his job would be very rough justice and unduly harsh."

Neighbours in Hibbert Street cottages in Luton, also wrote: "Mr Peters was our postman for a long time and we found him to be very kind, cheerful and utterly professional in his dealings with us."

An employment tribunal will hear Mr Peters case in Bedford next week, on August 23 and 24.

Royal Mail said it does not make any comment on individual cases.

A short while ago, one of our drivers lost the keys to an office. They were told it would be a conduct code issue but the keys turned up and nothing more was said, however a few weeks later the manager lost the keys to an office! Threre was no mention of conduct code, the manager just said it was an accident and he was sure they would turn up eventually. If only he showed the same curtesy to his staff!

Sad thing is. a tribunal wont make much difference as it is not for the Tribunal to decide the level of pushment or whether it was deserved or not, but did Royal Mial act in acocrdance with procedures..ie..did they think at the time of dismissal that they were correct to dismiss.

There have been many cases like this and I dont think many of them succeed.
