We have had those directors destroy lives at our place. Fact.
Single delivery was wrong then..and wrong now. However when revisions went in,and the walks longer,we where hounded and persecuted by management and some even dismissed,trying to do the job correctly. However the majority of offices saw the single delivery as "once over". Fact.
I haven't gone too far on my criticism on certain members,however if you have seen what some have ACTUALLY seen,then it is time for some to stop standing on the outside. The original post was for a new rep asking for advice. Thank god there is someone out there trying. There are very few companies that have a "resident rep" in every office. Yes HQ should realise this and sort out the branches,and no it certainly is not perfect. However we are the union and myself personally am happy to do all my union stuff in my own time.
In fact perhaps HQ should withdraw ALL release time and then we would see the wood for the trees so to speak. Freeloaders would dropout. But again I must reiterate that its no good criticizing from the outside,its hell out here in a reps world. Help us for gods sake........

Don't forget that job&finish was sold to the members by our employers with the full knowledge,if not participation of the union,it was not the members idea...

Just to add to the above,there was strong offices out during the strikes of 2003. However lots of offices where doing one of two things at that time :

a) did not go out at all

b) were creeping back in

Some were saying that "a fiver to some is 20 quid to me,i cannot afford to stay out". Also note that a ballot had been lost just before the wildcat strikes. It was a "no vote" by the membership. Its a shame there where not forums such as this at the time.....

The Union courses are ok but pretty intensive.Thats not to say bad but you might want to take your berocca !
All people friendly and the teachers are very well trained.
THe best thing that you get out of it for me was copies of all docs and procedures.Invaluable.

Give up, and hope for the best?
There are plenty of us, who're willing to stick with the Union, and try to get good, reliable, Reps in place. Thankfully, we already have good Reps where I am. But if we didn't, we'd find someone who was, rather than go quietly into the night.

Or perhaps you think that you can fight your own battles, without the aid of a Union. How exactly would you propose doing that?
Unions can arrange for official ballots, without facing disciplinary action. If on the other hand, you were to arrange any kind of action amongst yourselves. It would be UNOFFICIAL action, and therefore illegal. Yes, I know we've had more than our fair share of unofficial IA in RM. But if the instigators are found, then action can, and will, be taken against them by RM. We all know it. And if it has a particularly good effect on RM, and you don't have a National Union to back you up. Then you'll no doubt be sacked and replaced. Think about it.

Become a non-Union workplace?
Stick with the Reps we have, even if they're not up to the job (thank God we've got good ones where I am!)?

As I see it, all we can do now, is fight our own individual battles.
The CWU have given away so many things to RM bosses, and postal workers have gained absolutely nothing, not a bleedin' sausage, except ever worsening working conditions.
The CWU couldn't even be arsed to maintain our current work/life balance,with regards to Saturday attendances, I mean, for Christ almighty's sake, I realised when the CWU lost even that, it was finished, a well and truly spent force, if ever I saw one.
