Re: grief off the manager.....
Look Guys! Most posties know their own walk and have a really good idea what time the delivery span is they can do it in. Personally this is what I do. Go in at the right time take my break if I am due out of the office at 10 am and its not going to be 10 25 for example I approach the D.O.M and say "Boss I'm not going to finish today what would you like me to do" D.O.M will say " what reason won't you finish" could be several really. Busy traffic. you had to put 5 lots D2D together. work time learning meeting went on longer than it should. Council letter to every home etc, etc. I then walk away and say "I will leave it with you before I bag up but I assure you I will be cutting off " they come around to your frame them picking.
You got a lot gaps on here today. Its not 100%call rate. you still have 3 and half hours on your duty yet. then I say " grab yourself a bike and helmet and come out with me and tell them once again I WILL be bringing some back.
That's when they say " what part can’t you complete, bundle it up and leave it on the frame, 1Nil to the postie stand firm and stand your ground, don't swear, don't lose your head.
They cannot force you to go over. Please put this in your heads guys and press the save button..

Re: grief off the manager.....
Please ignore Kimski, you never ever ever ever, tell a manager your cutting off or cut off on a walk(you can be charged for willful delay)-You inform your manager that you can't complete your duty, in your normal duty time.Make him, make a a management decision. I've been through the same as you for years, until I said enough is enough.
Done the temper tantrums, coming in early working for nothing, having several manager's prep test me ...blah blah blah .Now, I don't even blink an eye when I tell my manager I can't finnish. You have to be firm, not angry.
Work your contracted hours and extend if you want not if your manager tells you.Royal Mail don't own you after your finnish time.

Re: grief off the manager.....
So you finish at 2.30 after having 30 min break (suggest you have 20 mins before leaving office) then have 2.20 finish.internetguy wrote:at the moment I start at 8.30 but its always changing. whatever time I start im ment to finish 6 hours later.gb93 wrote:Your duty start/finish time ?
Plenty of time to pick child up at 3.15.
Your choice, do this which might mean explaining to your Dom you cannot complete before leaving office.
Or carry on as now.
PS, 5 hour delivery have you had DM revision (weight off shoulder) ?
This ain't no baseball game, you get only one chance and you blew it.

Do you have a regular walk?? If yes, he may argue that prep time and actual walk time on your round will be achievable in your hours. If you have different walks which will slow down prep due to the obvious and slow down your walk time too....therefore, you will not complete unless on arrival your frame is prepped. I was 30 hour contract and description did state on arrival bag up and go. 30min to bag up/check walk log etc, 10 min to queue up for specials/find who your driver is, 20min to load van/do bag drops/get to 1st destination, 3-4 hours for your walk(If a new walk and your manager has told you to go here, then there etc.....probably best 2 ignore him
Leaves you 10-20mins in my estimation and I doubt you can prep in that time
I just had to keep cutting off, he then got it at least half prepped/sometimes fully
Good Luck

Re: grief off the manager.....
Thats the same scenario I had....collecting little 1 from school and only wanting to work to my contracted hours.....yet their attitude is 'how dare he just want to work his hours!' had a few sit downs with LINO...why didn't you complete yest? only had 3 hours delivery time on new walk....go figureinternetguy wrote:@madmartin
theres no mickey taking, im actually doing the round faster than others, i have to as i pick my son up from school at 3.15, or im supposed to. 4 times now iv had to call a friend up to do it as im late. it all boils down to the prep im having to do which is making me late. iv told the boss about my son but he's just not arsed. gonna have to nip this in the bud on monday.
i also should have mentioned my actual contract is 19 hours, up to a 30 temp. iv been told ill probably get put back down to 19 but in the last 3 weeks 2 new starters have been put on 25 hour contracts which means i'll be on less even though iv been at rm now for 14 months. im getting totally shafted....
What people 4get though, is that you guys(And myself until i luckily got offered an escape route) on these week2week contracts...sorry, 3month contracts leave you with no scope to argue or do things by the book

Re: grief off the manager.....
I am 30 hours (5 x 6hr days) permanent. I have to do everything , except IPS. No problem with that , but it does not work on anything but light days. BTW , I am an postie with 3 years experience; so it's not newbie problems.kimski1976 wrote:30 hours is prepping a full walk and doing a delivery. you only have to walk for 3.30 mins on delivery. just prep your mail up and tell your manager at about 9.30 your cutting off.
the difference between them on 25 hour contracts that are new starters there only on temps and will prob go once your revision has been implemented. like me. im 20 hours perm but at the moment on a 40 hour temp. there is many people on 20 hours perm who have been working there for 5 years. and this christmas we had 2 new people on temp 25 hr contracts.
if you want the extra money make the most of it but if you just want 30 hours just work your time.
and dont worry about managers saying they will put you back down to 19 if you dont take all your walk out it dont work like that.
The problem is recognised in the office. But, and here is the bottom line from a cost perspective. It is still cheaper for RM to pay me a couple of hours overtiem a week than employ a 40hr person. They still save the best part of 8 hours a week. A no brainer really.
Also, when I don't feel like going over I cut. Never had any problems with that. I tell them before I go out or if I get fed up then I bring a bag back. That is not willful delay as someone said earlier in the thread

You have to let them know where they stand from day 1, they don't bother asking me for OT anymore, cos they know what the answer is!!

DELIVERY
3.1 PRIOR TO COMMENCEMENT
a) Where an employee feels that on completion of preparation he/she may experience difficulty in completing his/her delivery within the authorised time allotted, he/she should approach his/her manager as soon as possible before setting out on delivery. It will be for the manager to discuss any problem and advise the employee what particular action should be taken.
b) When an individual has requested assistance on delivery, but the manager feels that assistance is not required, this decision along with the advice given to the employee will be recorded and associated with the daily traffic volume records. The employee can have access to this record and may ask to see it prior to commencement of his/her delivery. In addition to recording the employee’s request, the employee will be instructed to ring his/her local manager prior to a specified time or as soon as possible if full completion of delivery workload within the time allotted proves not to be possible.
3.2 AFTER COMMENCEMENT OF DELIVERY
a) If an individual is prevented from completing their delivery for any reason, it is essential that this is reported immediately either by returning to the office or by telephone (telephone costs will be refunded). A written record will be kept.
b) All employees should be informed of the local authorised arrangements, in writing, preferably in plastic card form if available.
4. GENERAL
a) Employees must be made aware that mail must NEVER be taken home at the end of a delivery. Correct endorsement procedures and correct use of the pouching off wallet, if appropriate, will avoid this.
b) Although the main aim will be to avoid the circumstances that may pose operational difficulties to an employee and to find ways of overcoming any potential problem at a very early stage, it is also important that all employees are made fully aware of the implications of delaying mail and possible consequences.
c) Measures shall be put in place to advise staff on the course of action to be taken when difficulties arise when managers are unavailable.
