It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

And don't you have to pay your insurance, upkeep and petrol out of that. Not to mention holiday and sickness pay.
And presumably you have to make your own private pension arrangements.

I am 100% telling you the truth about the rate i get , as i say its a very rural round.

There were 2 rounds going , the other one is easier ( the fella who does it gets finished by about 2 or 3 pm, but only does about 25 parcels per day - getting same rate as me ) They described my round as being the more difficult of the 2, but also having higher volume of parcels, as i was ex-RM and the other bloke hadnt done delivery work before, i was deemed more suitable for the harder round - I'm happy with that as i dont mind staying out longer if the moneys there.

Obviously i am self-employed ( i already was ) with the positives and negatives that brings.

I would imagine that Hermes drivers in big cities would be on a lower rate per parcel, as it is obviously easier to deliver the parcels quickly.

I havnt got Gestapo trained RM managers on my back, early days but manager i deal with is very positive and helpful if i have any problems/questions.

Quick add up of 4 days this week:

delivered 155 parcels = 310

collected 26 parcels to be returned. = 26

so 336 so far, probably be around 500 by end of week. ( and this is the quiet period )

probably worked the same hours the RM PTers do but with 99% less stress and hassle

savo, good on you if you are on £2 a delivery, getting a 1er a day.

according to the internet , especially the courier forums, you are undoubtedly hermes formerly parcelnets highest paid courier in the country, well done for you.

Ps, are you earning a 1er before or after tax, fuel, insurances, own car costs and other costs are taken away, if not then your probably only on say £50-£60 a day.

Oh and of course no sick pay, no holiday pay, no pension etc etc.

You really have sold the company to me, NOT, :nana

petrol costs will be offset against my earnings @ 40p per mile...

yep no holiday or sick pay agreed.

Pension, well i have my RM pension to come for what its worth...

Pensions, you have to either have a very big pension pot or have fcuk all ( and get all the top ups going )
If you are somewhere in the middle, the money you have coming in via pension will prevent you claiming various allowances, while the people who didnt bother trying to save will be looked after..

Yes thats true, but the reality is that you only actually make your 20% tax back

IE if you make £20,000 in one year and you say I have driven 10000 miles at 40p per mile, this equates to taking £4000 off your earings.

The differnce between twenty and 16 thousand is 4000 and the tax you would have paid on that four thousand would have been £800

So you are using your own car driving ten thousand miles for a saving of £800

Lets say you have a diesel and you can squeeze 40 a gallon out of it doing stop start deliveries, then you will have bought £1500 worth of fuel to do your job.

1500 - 800----700

So the reality is that its costing you( in my example) £700 to work for Hermes

A great deal indeed.

Ps I got a cse in maths :nana

Your maths is spot on bud.

But if Hermes are giving me the opportunity to make £30K, then i'm not going to be too worried about the £700

Savo

Please go and tell them on here http://www.parcelforum.co.uk/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that you are getting £2 an item

I'd love to see the reaction given the standard rate for packages is circa 45p

Savo if your really getting £2 a parcel then good on you because that seems quite a lot :Applause

I have to admit that this sort of thing worries me in the future of RM :hmmmm So many posties are hell bent on using their own cars i could really see some of them jumping to become self employed :arrrghhh

God i thought our rate was bad

Quote :

We have secured the option to deliver packet traffic for a limited number or existing clients. A good percentage of this traffic will be "post ". But its weight determines we are unable to secure parcel rates as it would be cheaper for clients to use Royal Mail. As a business we must take the work at very marginal prices or not take it at all.
As such, we need your support to deliver these packets to the same standards as you have been achieving for parcels. This will help provide us with the additional revenue to secure our strong position in the marketplace and enable us to weather the current economic climate.
As result of the measures we have introduced a packet rate which for your round{s} will be 45p.Your continued support is much appreciated and we trust that you understand our desire to secure the situation for the future.

So 500 packets a week which is a hell of a lot works out to just £225    Thats without tax ins and fuel costs which must bring it down to £150. Sorry i would sooner stack shelves

Savo if your getting £2 a drop i would keep well quite about it to other Hermes staff :Very Happy

Long day today ( and yesterday ) as i'm not familiar with some of the areas i'm delivering to, volumes seem to be ramping up though, 50 parcels each of last 2 days, new next catalogue going out now as well which should boost traffic.

Apparently we will be doing a £multi-million trial for Amazon soon.

Had a good chat with a postie today ( nice bloke, helped me out on a holiday park, where the numbering scheme must have been done by someone on crack.. ) as a long-serving full-timer he was reasonably happy with his lot, but was saying how badly the part-timers are getting shafted..

Regarding the parcel rate, my gaffer has said it is more than they would normally pay ( even for such a large rural patch ) and there is a possibility that it could be slightly decreased in future, but while fuel prices are so high, it is not being considered at all.
