RM office cleaner stole cash from children's birthday cards

A ROYAL Mail sorting office worker stole cash from children's birthday cards and her colleagues' purses.

Cleaner Rachel Melton, 23, of Clive Avenue in the Boultham area of Lincoln, pleaded guilty to four counts of stealing post containing money and gift cards from Lincoln's Firth Road depot.

She also admitted taking money from the handbags of fellow staff on four occasions between September and December last year, before being caught by investigators using covert surveillance.

Prosecutor Beris Brickles told Lincoln Magistrates Court among the items Melton was caught with was a one-year-old's birthday card from her great grandmother.

He said: "Melton was a cleaner at the Lincoln letter delivery office for five years and five months and had no previous convictions.

"But in September employees began to see money disappearing from their purses and reported it.

"All staff at Royal Mail office were advised to keep personal items locked up, but in November it happened again.

"The office has CCTV and it was used to see if anyone had entered the secure staff area on that day.

"Melton entered twice in the space of a few minutes.

"On December 7, Melton was seen acting suspiciously in the operations area – she took a packet from the delivery pile and pushed it down her trousers.

"After further surveillance, Melton was approached and interviewed – she admitted taking money and gift cards from post.

"She said she had done it regularly, but not every day and didn't know how much she had taken.

"She spent some credit from the gift cards – Marks & Spencer and Boots cards were used to buy Christmas presents for friends."

Mr Brickles also told the court Melton had also been cautioned for the theft of a Nintendo DS handheld games console from Asda, where she worked part-time.

In mitigation, solicitor Ali Zaki said Melton, who has since resigned from her job at Royal Mail, was motivated "by a need to survive".

He said: "She was living in a shared house with high rent that she couldn't afford, so she took the money.

"It was a stupid thing to do and she's ashamed."

Sentencing Melton to 20 weeks' imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, and 140 hours unpaid work, with £110 compensation for Royal Mail and £50 costs, District Judge Richard Blake said it was "a terribly sad case."

"I, like all people, remember the joy as a child of receiving a card from grandma with money in it.

"Thankfully, most people have learnt it's not safe to send money in the post, but perhaps they'll now have to think twice about sending gift cards because of deceptive people like you."
