Royal Mail apologises after thousands of letters found at postman's house

The Royal Mail has apologised to customers in Leicestershire after thousands of undelivered letters were discovered at a postman's home.

Royal Mail investigators searched the house in Leicester after receiving numerous complaints from residents who had not received their post.

More than 14,000 pieces of mail were discovered. The items were destined for homes all over the city and county.

The post has now been recovered and staff are re-delivering the items along with letters of apology.

Communication Workers Union representative Andy Connelly, who lives in the West End of Leicester, said he received a birthday card six months after it was sent.

Mr Connelly, a city councillor who represents the Westcotes ward, said: "The haul included one of my birthday cards, which arrived six months late and slightly damp. It came with a letter of apology from the Royal Mail.

"We're not just talking about hundreds of letters which have been undelivered though, the extent of this is in the thousands."

Last week, Narborough resident Geoff Fairgrieve, 73, received a parcel of eight letters, including insurance documents and bank statements, dating back to April, 2010. An apology note was also in the bundle.

It said: "Dear customer, I am sorry that the enclosed mail has been found in this condition after being allegedly withheld from delivery in the Swan House area by a Royal Mail employee."

Mr Fairgrieve said: "I had some quite important mail which wasn't delivered – I thought it was quite odd."

A postman who worked in the same depot said: "It wasn't just a few letters, it was a mammoth amount, about 40 to 60 sacks.

"We're still having to re-deliver all the post, it has taken ages."

The incident has not yet been reported to the police.

However, the Royal Mail have said they are likely to prosecute.

A spokesman said the mail was recovered in November, 2010.

He said "Royal Mail has a zero tolerance approach to any dishonesty and that stance is shared by the overwhelming majority of postmen and women, who are honest and hardworking and who do all they can to protect the mail and deliver it safely.

"We will always seek to prosecute the tiny minority of people who abuse their position of trust.

"Royal Mail customers should be confident in our services and systems, but where we are alerted to problems, either through our own stringent checks or from information supplied by our customers, we take decisive action to investigate."

It's fugging c***s like this that helps to cement the public's limited view of us posties. :evil/mad

Half the problem with all these reported incidents is that not all information is laid out in front of the reader for the general public to digest, and so we don't know for instance in what capacity were they working for Royal Mail in, leaving the general consensus that we must be all the same -- to those of small-minded opinion, that is. It's this kind of 'them and us' type of reporting that leaves little room for those of us to defend what we do. :arrrghhh
We posties do things differently, but we still get shot at!
